Long character and login names - no longer supported

Character names and login names longer than 32 characters are no longer supported or allowed. Long login names will no longer work, long character names may or may not work - but may be wiped at any time.
This is necessary because an excessively long character name has crashed the database and caused a least an hour of downtime for the module.
Thank you for your cooperation and patience

Any idea if 'foreign' characters will also have any maleffects?

Joran didn't say anything about symbols and foreign-language charcters. This was purely the length of the name that was causing the stack overflow.
So no more "Redheaded Jonathan, Defender of all the Realms Aboveground" names. Put more detail into your character descriptions instead.

if we have long names and would like them changed to shorter can we request that they be changed

You can send a PM to Joran and ask. It never hurts to ask. I don't know if he can do it or not.

There are only 70 or so offending names. I should be able to handle the requests okay, so send em in.
To answer the question posed previously, foreign characters will be fine, since the database uses the unicode character set to store the names.
Oh, and just in case anyone gets any bright ideas: Yes the names are parsed before being entered into the database, so there's no point in trying to commandeer the server via player input :)

Ah yes, a standard buffer overflow... you can crash just about anything Microsoft made with one of those... just goes to show NS4 devs are better the Microsoft programers
and just to stay on topic, do by Name you mean full name or the first/last name... not that I can actually think of a 32 char long name

How about "Drakhan Valane, Enslaver of Apollo's Soul"

Full Name, or First plus Last, must be < 32.
Drakhan - yes that's too long :)

I know. I was poking fun at Djshale's comment that he couldn't think of a name that long. :)

So if your character has 47 including spaces and was made before this post it could be wiped from the system? If so are the Dm's going to re level and equip the new characters that replace the ones that got wiped. I myself have worked very hard to get my character to 12 level as I'm sure all of you have also. Personally I think that whould be fair. Sorry if I sounds like I'm whining. But on another note I like the new system with the level restriction it is a lot more challenging.
Thanks

I would put in a request to have Joran (or whoever handles them) shorten it. Re-levelling and equipping is sort of against the spirit of the beta in my opinion. Make a new char. You might find a bug or 5 on your way back up.

I did a bone head thing. Tried to make 2 new characters with names that are too long befor I saw this post. So I cant even get in the game with them. Anyway to delete those two from my account? Just curious.
