Need Help With Hingar

Hello, I am having issues with Hingar! I stupidly did not realize I had dropped my clerics original Mithril Shield while messing around with my inventory. After O lost it I redid the Hingar Quest to get a replacement shield. When I went back after giving the book to him and returning once several resets had passed, all he had to say to me was he was not able to understand the book! Did I just give him the wrong response and need to go fetch another book for him to try again?
