Why don't the devs create a section on the website for help on coding and developing the mod? Only let Devs create new topics, and they could post items that are not high priorities, for the rest of us to come up with implementation ideas, pseudo-code or code. The only info that would be required is some sort of overall design of the system, so we know what is possible or not.
At worst, it would be more spam, but at best, we could see updates regularly, and a lot of pressure off the devs.
I don't really have the time to spend coding (I do it all day, as it is), but it would be nice every now and then to turn my attention to something like that.
Just a thought.
Help for Devs
I am not saying that you should let people look at everything you are doing, but things that show up in the ideas and suggestions that you think would be nice to add to the mod but are so far down the list of priorities that it would be a loooooong time before you would have a chance to even look at it. Also, you could post things like bugs, that are not that big, but again are not high up on the fix list. If you keep the forum to just text, making people post code and ideas, as opposed to files, then you wouldn't have to worry about going through other people's files (for the unscrupulous few who would abuse) because there would be a lot of eyeballs on it which would spot any attempts to break things.Yonwe wrote:we keep it hidden to the average player so we can discuss new things without ruining the surprise too much

If an idea is "that" good or useful it will be moved to the dev forums or stickied, it's happened to me before.
Also as for bug tracking, try here: http://www.nsrealm.com/bugs/login_page.php
I finally remembered my password and it looks like it's still being used eventhough the latest news is from 2004.

The reason for the hidden forums is two fold.
A: We need a place to discuss and inform the rest of the DM/Dev/Admin staff about problem players and what has been or needs to be done to about it. We have rarely made this information public as it leads to vigilante justice and flame wars, neither of which is beneficial to the community in general.
B: Things that are mentioned in passing or ideas that we have that get put into the "that would be nice, but sometime much later" pile seem to turn into percieved rock solid promises by a section of the community. Heck we hear all kinds of rumors when we are on as players that are being told to us as a "fact" that have never even been hinted at anywhere. Better to keep the DM/Dev ideas close to the chest, that way they arent percieved as promises.
As Jester pointed out, some of the community ideas are so good we move them into the Dev forums just so they wont get lost in the mess, others are paraphrased for readability (some of you folks have great ideas but cant make it just a small succinct post).

add that to your signature, it's funny!
Seriously though.
Just post an idea anyway.
It's more of a bad thing to not post an idea than to post a dumb one.
Just think, you post a dumb idea and someone reading will think, "nah, that would never work, BUT this might work..." and that dumb idea just caused a good idea.
