I played a MUD years ago that had Puff the magic dragon as one of the toughest solo mobs on the server. He destroyed the biggest groups around. His purpose was to slowly roam the server and interact in a benevolent and humorous manner with anyone who stumbled across him. Often times he was found within the gates of the main/central/starting city. Randomly casts low lvl buffs etc... Says funny jokes out loud...
Another character NPC, also very difficult to beat, was the Golum. This particular server had items with a limited drop count. 2 sets of Oakley Blade sunglasses, one single excaliber, and in this case, 'One' ring. Whoever held the ring was the golum's target and he would slowly, but surely track that holder down and attempt to kill and steal the ring back. The longer the ring holder played in any one area for a session, the closer the golum would get to him. This was prolly 1995, and the LoTR craze still revolved around the cartoon movie of 'The Hobbit' and the actual books.

Re: Roaming NPCs
cool idea, but i think this was brought up once, and they mostly complained that it would lag ther server iirc.
