The Mountain Grumbles - Part I

Post by Dalan »

Somewhere along the top of Redhorn Mountains……………

“Tis a beautiful world…not bad, not bad”, Moradin mused as he nodded his head and arched his eyebrows. A familiar sound alerted him to someone’s presence. “Everythin’s fairly peaceful here, nothin’ for ye to see, move along lil’ one, move along.”

To which the stranger replied, “Hullo, Maker Most Magnificent, I’m doing just dandy, thankya for asking, and just because everything seems to be dreadfully unexciting here doesn’t mean that I haven’ been here the whole time. Which reminds me, I just happened to come acro-”

“Whad’ya want Brandobaris!?!” Moradin bellowed, cutting off the talkative God.

“Hmph! No need to get all stuffy.” The Trickster indignantly replied as he handed Moradin a note. “But since ya asked, ‘rather rudely by the way, I just happened to have a great idea ye might be interested in. Look, I even wrote it down!” Moradin’s beard bristled and his eyebrows scrunched down as he examined the note Brandobaris had given him.

“.....this is the best idea ye can come up wit’?” remarked Moradin.

“Well, in all honesty, I figured I’d have a better chance of just asking ya rather than anything else.” Brandobaris demurely replied.

“You? Honesty? HAHAHA!” Moradin said, laughing heartily and tossing the note aside, whilst struggling to regain his composure. When his laughter had died down, Moradin looked at Brandobaris, and upon seeing that he was no less persistent in receiving an answer. “I cannae believe yer serious, I’d nev’r send him down here to wreck havoc wit’ you!” said Moradin, giving Brandobaris his answer.

With a hand stroking his beard and his eyebrows deep in thought, Moradin fiercely states, “Wha’ever yer to be plottin’ an schemin’ in tha’ lil’ hea………” Moradin looks around, and the diminutive god is nowhere to be seen.

With a cruel look on his face and enough laughter to shake the mountain, the Soulforger says to himself, “Send someon’ down, eh? Aye, an I know jus’ tha one! Bwah..ha..ha..hahaha."

Somewhere very deep in the Underdark.......

“Shoulda known he was going say no,” thought Brandobaris disappointedly, as he paced back and forth. “I mean really…. he never wants anyone to have any fun. Would it kill him to send someone down here to help these poor folk with their constant quest for adventure?”

Brandobaris looked down at his note that he had picked up after Moradin discarded it. The note simply read, “Summon Vergadain here so I won’t be so bored. If you do, I’ll promise to stop stealing things from you and playing Whack-a-Dwarf with ‘em.”, with a rudimentary drawing of what could best be described as a Smiley Face next to the word ‘Pleeease.’

Scheming what to do next, ‘which was certainly more exciting than being bored,’ he pondered the idea of simply leaving Aetheria to a different realm, but ‘many of the other realms weren’t so…welcoming,' he thought. Having made many enemies, ‘it sure did make things interesting,’ he felt that he was due a season of anonymity.

‘Here was Aetheria! A whole new world, meaning, so many possibilities!’ He had forgotten how boring and tedious the lives of those on new worlds could be. There were so many possibilities, but nothing really stood out. ‘Vergadain, however, would definitely have a good idea of what do with this mundane realm, especially with all these different types of dwarves running around all over the place.’

Moradin’s response though, made asking him to visit not as simple as he had thought. 'Moradin would need…encouragement. Yes, encouragement,' Brandobaris thought as he rapidly rubbed his hands together. "And I know just the way to do it. Hehe."

“Perfect!” Exclaimed Brandobaris, as he finally made his way to the Primary Temple of Lolth.

When the rifts had first opened, the drow were perhaps the least accepted “civilized” race to come through. Determined, the few drow held their ground in the Underdark against constant invasions from locals as well as new arrivals. Fearing what a drow presence in Aetheria could become, many factions constantly attacked Menzoduran in its beginnings.

Their attacks failed and eventually winded down as Aetheria further fractured itself. The paladins of the North found new enemies and locales to bring under their brand of Law. The damage had been done, however, as the first Temple dedicated to Lloth had been a common target. It was one of the few buildings to “fall,” but how the Temple was destroyed was unknown to the mortals.

Brandobaris knew better, the Temple was neither destroyed nor abandoned, it was merely cut off from the Underdark when Lolth’s followers failed to defend its location. It now existed quietly in the darkness of a secluded cave, where the only way in was through divine means or very, very small crevices. Brandobaris chose the latter means of getting to the Temple, having decided that things wouldn’t be so pleasant if he were to arrive in a way that could alert Lolth's attentions. Also, there was always fun to be had in breaking and entering.

Brandobaris easily snuck into the temple. Finding his way through the dark temple, Brandobaris looked around for something promising. He spotted a small library of sorts, where books and many other exotic things lay dormant. Rummaging through the dust-covered artifacts, Brandobaris came upon a heavy tome that seemed promising…
