Black Screen of Death

Post by P. Fricebottle »

At an odd place. Its not in-game, but the Load-Up Screen where you choose New Game, Load Game, Multiplayer, Options, etc. Instead of that screen loading up, all I get is a black one. I can select Multiplayer, Load Game, and all that good stuff, but I have to guesstimate where that button is. Its been getting rather annoying and after re-installing the game and downloading several patches, it still hasn't been fixed.

Suggestions?

The window image showing the different options might be damaged. That is why you only see a black screen. Only guessing though.

nvidia drivers at a certain point caused this problem with nwn. the latest BETA drivers from nvidia.com fix the black screen issue.

for more info search the bioware forums for black screen.

Yes, I updated my video drivers (among other things) to get Bioshock running and it started happening.
I get a mouse pointer so I work around it by pressing the locations I know the buttons are to start or load a single player game. Once it gets to a loading or character creation screen it springs into life and I can cancel and it'll show the main screen.

Damn NWN's lack of keyboard shortcuts, otherwise it'd be really easy.

Well considering the total lack of info you have supplied I took a shot in the proverbial dark for a problem I had but fixed using the forceware update.
If you can't provide decent intel then I suggest you do your own research and fix it yourself.
If something went wrong that was not my intent. Try googling nvidia black screen and see what comes up. Or don't.

you need the latest BETA drivers. i am on forceware 169.04 and it fixed the problem. when you go to download you have to look for the beta section labelled "prerelease" under option 2

http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us

nothing short of the recent beta will fix the problem.

note that this driver will hose the party portraits in nwn2. ;)

Ah yes. Had this problem too, when i came back a little play here with my new comp.
Driver isues, yes, but there is another method to fix it :
Create a shorcut link pointing to
C:\NeverwinterNights\NWN\nwmain.exe +TestNewModule "modulename"

By this way, you're launching nwn directly on module choice. Then cancel, and you will return to the nwn screen without bug.

Ah, you linked me to the page I used to download ForceWare Release 163, its what came up when I filled out that form. I'm aware its a Driver issue, but haven't been able to find the solution. I'll try your suggestion ashkren, can't say I'm willing to hose the party portraits in NWN 2 as I'm currently playing the Campaign and I plan on playing Mask of the Betrayer as well.
