A possible reason for game crashes.

Post by de_slider »

Over the past few days I have had to rebuild my hard-drive after getting infected with a worm. Whatever one it was, this time it was really nasty. Not only did it start to eat up files, this one started to damage hard drive sectors. It was so bad that at first it wouldn't allow me to format of scandisk in Dos (from boot). It took 3 days using various tool and through operating systems to finally clean out the worm and repair the damaged sectors.

I now have my 2 operating systems back in place and have been configuring my Win 2k for optimal performance. This involves disabling a good number of services after installing all the service packs and security updates.

I then started on the updates I had mentioned in an earlier post in regard to the CPU, video/sound, UsB, APG etc before I even start to install NWN. This is because I had one heck of a time with game crashes.

Another tid-bit that I came across is the possibility of a particular exe that is design to run anytime you fire up your system with a Window O/S could also cause game crashing by the nature of the program. It's called: mobsync.exe. What this is, is a process associated with Internet Explorer and is used to synchronize the off-line pages you have chosen to be stored locally with the matching online pages. For some reason this exe can interfere with games.

You need to turn it off. For instructions on how to do that do a web search "Stopping mobsync.exe". In order to verify that it is turned off, you need a command like the old Win 98 had of "msconfig" that will allow you to see what programs are fired when your system is turned on. If your operation system dose not have a "msconfig" command that you can use in "run" the look for a small piece of software call:
Startup Control Panel 2.8 by Mike Lin.

What this does is install an icon in your control panel called "Startup" that will show you all the auto programs running on startup and allow you to disable those you don't need or that are not necessary. If you are unable to find a copy PM me and I will e-mail the one I have. Been using it for years and is completely safe.

Happy gaming
