An Endless Saga

Post by P. Fricebottle »

Walking along the walls of the city, I look upon the horizon and see the figure of a short, stocky character. I strain my eyes to see it more clearly but to no avail, I call one of the more experienced Watchmen to my side.

The Watchman slowly made his way to my position as I was still straining to make out the distant figure on the horizon. He began to cast a series of vision enchantments to better see the object, but I held up my hand - signaling him to stop.

"I know who it is," I said.

"Then why bring me over here?" he asked irritatedly.

I did not answer, I merely traveled to the lodge of the great Tower. The figure became ever clearer to me now, for I had seen his face before. Time and time again.

I hastened my pace, and I made my way up the tower to the Archmages.

"What is your business?" barked one archmage impatiently, I having interrupted him while he was busy with his alchemy.

"Dwarves," I said, "Approaching the city."

"Ha, those vertically challenged fools? You interrupted my for that? Fetch the Guilds, its their problem - not mine."

Disappointed, I made my way back down the tower. Peeking outside a window, I saw more than one. Expected of course, it was always the same ones - give or take one or two. The brittle old one with his stick, and his two comrades of speed and agility.

I shouted out to a nearby citizen to fetch any Guild Defenders in the city, and I quickly made my way down to the Watch and Guardians to take my position amongst them. I fear not death, for it never comes. They never fight us, as if they're above us.

As I approach the town square I attempt to gather the Guardians to block the bridge, but to no avail. They are mindless sentinels and slow in their moving.

I feel a quick burst of wind in me face, it is too late.

The three burst through the gates in a wild rampage and through the town into the tower in seconds. But I am not the only one late, for the Guilds have already been motioned. I smile, knowing that the Tower will run with the blood of fools in minutes.

I hear an explosion from the tower and head back. There is smoke, but my filthy lungs have already borne such filth and torture in a deathless life that it does not phase me. I hear screams and smashing of weapons against bone and bone against weapon.

I hear sharp sound painful to the ears, as the Cradle is finally defenseless and they take what is rightfully ours. I feel the breeze but see nothing, and expect to see nothing. It is already over, but it worries me not. We shall find it in our hands again.

As I reach the top of the tower we count the casualties in high numbers, as usual. They shall be back in full health within an hour, possibly minutes. It matters not. My care for this madness has disappeared a long time ago.

I walk among broken glass, bones, and spilled blood on the floor. I see the bodies around me, familiar, some not. But then I see one body, the familiar dwarf from the distance. I approach him, hearing his strains as he breathes hardly - blood filling his lungs.

I look down upon the dwarf and I ask, "Why do you come only to die?"

His head tosses to the side to look at me, and I see through his helmet his eyes. Instead of defeat, I see victory in them. I see him smile as he replies, "Because its what I was born to do."
