Wizards for Dummies

Post by LunarSquirrel »

I've never been a fan of casting classes in any game I've played. Now I'm forced to finally bite the bullet and make one.

I need some suggestions on making a self-sustaining wizard, with a few hitches.

-This wizard will ONLY be used for Arcane crafting.
-I want to try and cut off the build around 24ish, where getting xp is easy and there's plenty of it. No need to go all the way to 40.
-Would prefer it be self sufficient, or at worst case be reliant on a summon to tank.

Keep in mind I've NEVER played a wiz before, so even if you think the suggestion is common knowledge, just assume that I have no clue what it all entails. I want to make this character at least 21 for 1 epic feat, and keep the entire build as low as possible so as to max XP from mid level creatures (mostly FD, maybe planes if you think I can hack it there). Also since I'm going only to 20's, I'm not against doing just 1 or 2 levels of something for benefit since I'm 99.9% certain I'll never finish the build anyhow.

With that, I'm looking forward to hearing all suggestions on the matter. I've already done the search option and pulled up a couple starting ideas on what I should look forward to, but that's undoubtably going to change since it's only a partial build. Info on stats, schools, skill and feats are needed as well as any other insight you might have.

Sorry for the friggin' novel that is my question. Thanks in advance.

My arcane crafter is lvl 21. He can get 5 - 10 k in like 20 min doing effrets.

Start by taking greater spell focus in whatever gives better sumons(conjuration or something like that) It will make your like wery easy at all lvls.

Take the elf race that get better int, max your int for better saves, and favord class.

Make sure you have greater spell focus in necromancy by the time you get to take wail! Wails kills ice trolls and effrets easily, the plaar aly dosent last long unless you extend it, but the dragon knight dos! The lvl 8 planar aly byffed can solo ice trolls :p

I've already read that Fat.

I'm asking for info about a LIMITED build where all those suggestions might not apply.

conjuration focus for the summon to follow and necro focus for the death spells

if your cutting the build around 24-25 you won't run into the super high fort saves until the end, so death spells will be nice.

conj focus for summons adds a nice boost for having a companion to take on almost anything, as soon as you get invis you probably won't even be fighting for yourself anymore.

You might think about Air Gensai. For the Gensai, all planar summons are more powerful. Dragon Knight (for Good) is a Solar, which is a planar being. Once I fully buff him he can easily solo up to the Zons <not including the bosses>. If I help him, we can lay waste up to the Queen with only a single rest to rebuff. Not to bad considering it only cost me one feat.

Certainly take the Conjuration:Spell Focus, Conjuration:Greater spell focus. If you go the Air Gensai route, there isn't a reason to take Conjuration:Epic Focus as you will only need the Dragon Knight.

<ECL+2, so XP will be slower>

Hope that suggestion helps.

Well, while they're not here yet for arcane, other crafting disciplines have already been enhanced to go up to level 30. In time you might regret aiming for such a low end point.

Ya know, I thought about that but other than the amulet, what else would you want upgraded?

I'll definitely keep my options (and the build) open ended as to accomidate changes.

if just for crafting porpouses and if your not worried about lvl 30 gear necro conj is how u do it.

although u will mow down efreets and trolls easy u might now want the ecl 2.

hell you prob don't want the ecl anyways. u can easily hit 30 ( not fast ... u will be grinding ) in icegiants.

and since its just for crafting u might want to necro focus as a wizzy. ull get epic warding at epic and u will get more spell slots.

sorry

...
anyways, havok is right ...if you are just worried about a crafter than a necro wiz is a fine and rather rapid way of doing such....
-just go elf, dont bother with ecl...unless you intend to use the build as a pvp-er ...etc ....but if you were going to do that you could just as easily stay elf and take a monk level somewhere  ...
-conj focus is a good idea as well, as already mentioned that way when you are leveling up in the 20s you have somthing that can partially tank for you if you are soloing.

A sun elf with good alignment is nice for the +2 int and you still get wizard as favored class.

Feat selection something like:
SpellFoc(Conj), GSpellF(Conj)
SpellFoc(Necro), GSpellF(Necro)
Extend, Empower
SpellPen, GSpellPen
Maximize
Toughness
CombatCasting

Take Epic Spell Dragon Knight at level 21 and you rock.

Be sure to make your crafting wizard LA.

Combat Casting and Epic Combat Casting are wastes of feats. They just have cool sounding names.
