Changes for Pure barbarians?

Post by Rander »

I saw this mentioned in other threads and so far i see the two main problems with pure barbarians are:

1) Damage

A pure class barbarian using a one-handed weapon (IE any smart player) has aplorable damage. I may only be low level at the moment, but im currently dealing a max of roughly 27 to a combat dummy on a non-crit. Fighting Giants Ogres i do even less (10-12 ogres, roughly 1-10 on giants) whereas other players my level score for 12's and up easily.

2) AB

With only rage as a source of AB boosting, pure barbarians are simply left behind when it comes down to AB. Granted, at low levels we have a massive edge on others, but as leveling builds and item strength grows from +1 to +3 all the way up as high as +7 or +8, rage becomes disenchanting, if not replacable by damn near any mage with half the brains to bring Bull's Strength and Endurance. Once Greater Rage starts capping your Modifiers, pure barbarians can only rely on their feats (for a whopping 4 AB), weapons (for up to 6), and BAB progression (+1 AB per 2 levels... yay?) for any kind of AB boost.

What could be changed to fix this?

Well, I'll start by mentioning the roundabout way of my concept. There is currently a feat only usable by barbarians of 20th or grater level, called Mighty Rage. At the moment, Mighty Rage is pretty much useless as soon as you aqcuire it, as Greater Rage was already very close, if not already capping your bonuses to strength and constitution. The only added benefit of even touching Mighty Rage is that it adds an extra +1 to will saves and doesnt incur an AC penalty for its use.

For all of you out there who don't know me (alot of you) i play on a PvP server called Antiworld CTF. On antiworld, we have changed Mighty Rage to simulate an un-capped strength and constitution boost as easily in as much of a balanced manner as possible.

On antiworld, any barbarian with 21 Con and 21 str may take Mighty Rage, and use it (Stacking with Greater Rage). Before they mighty rage, Greater rage has already capped both con and str. So what is the point of Mighty Rage? On my server, Mighty Rage adds a flat +4 AB, +4 Damage, +4 Will Saves, +4 Fortitude, and +4 HP per barbarian level (only the HP is per barbarian level).

Granted, there were ungodly ways to exploit this to make characters do things with rage that are unspeakable, but if you make Mighty Rage a pure-barbarian-only feat, and added these changes (possibly with less Temporary HP, maybe something like a flat 100 instead of Based on Level?) there would be at least a moderate incline in pure-barbarians on the server.

This helps the damage out a good bit by adding +4, which still wont make us crazy damage dealers, but it will give us a bit more bite than the average joe. The AB boost allows us to raise our constitution to play a more Tank-like role in the group, while still maintaining the AB to hit stuff every now and again. And the HP boost will give us more endurance in battle!

Just an idea to consider for pure barbarians as a boost ;)

we are currently making decisions about rages and taking into account that items cap out your stats. also...i thought barbs got +1/1 BAB progression until epic when everyone moved into the +1/2 BAB

They do, I think he's referring to the mediocrity of their progression once in epic levels.

My Barbarian has about 58 to hit while Raging, with no special bonuses from from our Pure Class Bonuses, that's a quite healthy amount I'd say, especially when you count in this is a Multiplayer Server and you can find someone with buffs to make you rock Harder.

Pure Barbarians are fine as is, they'll be even better when our bonuses go live, people just have to know what they're doing.

We are however discussing changing some of the functions of Rage for all Barbarians, and will get to them if time allows.

Yes, I'm a DM, but your build still sucks.

Exactly. Granted, we aren't the only class hit by this, but alot of Multiclass builds can soak up AB from the countless sources out there with their last 20 levels. All we get is more DR, more HP, and Bonus Feats.

EDIT: at any rate, is there any publicized format of the planned boosts to Pure Barbarians in epics?

Formats for the Pure classes are released as the bonuses for live for the public. We're currently in the testing phase for Barbarian Bonuses as we speak.
