i dont think he is worried about casters, rather he was just trying and succeding in my mind to make valid points why weapons should be limited to +4.

we went from rings to weapons... this is just another auril-ism......should we all just wield +2 clubs ? :shock:

He's got a point though--casters have no good protection spells left aside from EMA and Epic Warding.

Back on the ring track..

Instead of putting in rings that give unbalancing resistences, why not put in epic rings that give basic uses of epic lvl or handy spells?

Like..

Ring of Mummy dust (always nice to have a friend)
Ring of Greater restoration
Ring of Full Heal
Ring of Summons (any type / lvl of creature summons 6th lvl or above)
Ring of Knocking (would solve the other suggestion of people getting access to unlocking ability w/o having to find a rogue every time you wanted a locked chest opened w/o bashing it and losing most, if not all the stuff inside)

ect ect. Possibilities are just about endless.

the goal is to make you have to choose between different types of equipment.

spells on rings cause issues because they can be equiped/unequipped in battle, you dont have to actually give anything up to use them.

further, spells belong to classes. if you put all the spells on equipment, what would be the point in taking the classes...

for example.
ring of mummy dust:
instant obsoletion of mummy dust. an epic spell now made castable be every average joe, and he doesn't even have to take the time to switch rings in combat!!

ring of knocking:
an already rare skill, now its extinct. (besides with the equipment already in the game you can open most stuff with a single point in open lock.)

edit: on a tangent, id like to see dcs on unlucking chests boosted a bit, and some more higher lvl chests/areas to make open lock worth investing in.

Cross-class use of spells is already available for anybody with rogue lvls and umd.

And what about all those potions and scrolls that people use? We going to restrict the use of raise dead scrolls to JUST people with cleric levels?

And if ya notice, i said BASIC spell usage. So a ring of mummy dust, for example, would give the player the weakest, most basic summon available, both in duration and combat strength / capabiltiy.


Its already been stated that putting any more skill boost onto epic rings then whats already available would be unbalancing. A fighter summoning a basic mummy lord for 10-20 rounds would not be unbalancing. Just more interesting ;)

On the ring of knocking : Hmm its a rare skill, yet anybody can open just about anything with 1 point in lock picking. Yep, definately dont see the contridiction there. Nosireebob :P

I would have to disagree there, having run into several recent locked areas with DC's of 50+ (Amazon prison, Earth plane x 3), and there are likely more areas. Takes a few more ranks than just 1 to break through.
But, it's such a draining job that, until you've DMed on an NWN server yourself, you the playerbase, have got to cut the DMs some slack. - Flailer

I got some ideas

How bout some rings that offer damage vulneralabilities as well as resistence.

Or a ring that raise some skills by alot but lowers certain key ones like disclpline or concentration.

This would add some variety to the items.

DC20 + [dex bonus?] + [1skill point unlock] + 10(2x rings) if am not mistaken i think there is a +7 instead of teh NPC that goes only for +5. high level Cleric with trickery :D.

i guess 1 skill point will still be achievable. but if not. am sure you wont be needing more than 10skill points. and oh i think there is also a glvoe that give a +?? to open lock. not sure if it was +5.

+7 from gloves, +10 from avendell rings, +12 i think is most from thieves tools= thats a 29 right there...30 because you have to invest 1 point into open locks to use all these. so +30 from items +20 for the roll out of combat is a +50. +50 to open a door and thats before dex bonus kicks in or trickery domain cleric.

*note* +12 from tools i'm not sure about. can't remember right off hand what the max is, but adjust the calculations accordingly.

i havent seen any +12 thieves tools since Post-Wipe ....most i have come across now is +6. :/

and to comment on the rings -- alot of cool ideas i must say :wink: tho at the same time we dont want to go completly overboard, i see some people screaming Ns3 .....so rings that offset a build too much would be rather silly (such as the +7epic rings that i mentioned initially) ....or even comparing to the +9ac rings in ns3 :shock:
