A Case For The DMs to Decide

Last night, a dispute arose between myself, Loki and Poet. I will try to describe the circumstances as well as possible. Those two may add their input to help create as accurate an account as can be had.

I logged in on a certain Plane, where I had logged out the previous night helping one of these two level her toon. I promptly headed out for another area (to kill a boss just a map off another planar area) and passed a small group of players fighting some of the mobs. The map they were on is the first one in about 6 that lead to the boss. I assumed they were leveling (since I have leveled in the same place before) and quickly passed by them.

Once I get to the map containing the boss, I start killing all of the minions since I am soloing. Just as I am killing last minion, in preparation to kill boss, this group starts running by me. Loki PMs me to ask if they can kill boss for XPs (he and Poet know I am a levl 40). I respond by saying yes, but I want loot. They kill boss and I run into room to see them all standing around loot. They were. in fact, rolling for it. I stand there for a short while thinking they just looking at what dropped. After a minute or so, it occurs to me that they were probably planning to take loot for themselves. Loki had logged off to defend relics immediately after PMing me w/o saying much of anything to group. So they knew nothing of the conversation Loki and I had had. Afreaid I was going to be cheated, I went up and grabbed an item I was interested in and replaced it with another one like it to free up room in my inventory. Everyone in the group started verbally or actually fighting with me, thinking I had ninja-looted the item. I thought that was odd since they had obviously taken my kill.

I spent near an hour trying to hash things out with Loki and Poet, and decided finally to present the case to the DMs. I have the item and will give it back to the group if the DMs think I should. What rules apply here? Is it permissible for a group or person to run by someone or some group about to kill a boss and then steal the kill? What constitues running by someone? In NS 3.5, there was a rule about passing someone or some group on way to EC. I don't think there is such a rule on NS 4.

All of this is ironic becasue the very person who rolled high for the item and stands to lose it, is the very person I spent an hour helping level the previous night and even more on another night. I let that person have almost all of the loot that dropped, including from a boss. But then, suddenly, I am the vilest villian because I presumed to think that the loot from the boss I was about to kill, having first killed all the minions, belonged to me.

I defer to the DMs better judgement....

As a follow-up, I read that kill stealing and ninja looting are only permissible in a faction vs factions setting (which it was). Maybe better rules are needed or maybe Im not quite used to PvP yet...

From our Player Guidelines section:

Kill Stealing

Kill stealing when another player purposely takes the kill experience from the player/party that initiated combat with the creature. This is generally frowned upon, but in a faction-vs-faction setting can be allowed.

Ninja Looting

This is when another player not involved in the killing of a creature steals items from the kill before the responsible party can retrieve them. Again, this is permissable in a faction-vs-faction setting only.

I would just like to say that the ordeal is being blown out of proportion...he passed us and took kills and we didnt take that loot from him for those...we then passed him while he was killing mobs and happened to kill a boss a ways in front of him and he decides he deserves the loot from it. It was Imbued Adamantine boots which are rare so yes our party was upset when he invised and looted our bag and took them after we killed the monster. Bottom line.. he still has the boots like the thief he is and we have moved on...

As I said in game neither of us actually broke any rules. I tried talking to you before passing you in the passageway even though you did not do so with us earlier. I mentioned to my party that you were interested in the loot but I logged before anything was decided. You chose to not speak to the party and instead took what you thought you deserved and as I told you that was not against the server rules. Neither was our running past you or your running past us. Usually these types of issues should be brought up with the DMs privately and I thought we had resolved things in game.

The boots rightly belonged to Poets group for one simple reason, they could have stopped long enough to kill you on the way by. Had they attepted to and failed then this woudnt be an issue, if they had, you wouldnt have been there and this wouldnt be an issue.

It sucks when 2 groups are headed for the same goal and things like this happens. However, things like this are bound to happen from time to time.

p.s. it shouldnt have hit the public boards to begin with.
