46/46

Post by Charles I »

Neversumer4 46/46 has been a frequent sight lately. It's good that new people are joining the Neversummer family but also frustrating when you have to wait to play. I have heard some say that they waited up to an hour for a spot to free up so they could log in. What's the solution? Simple, add another NS4 server (easier said than done). Where should this server come from? In the past month I have noticed 5 or fewer people on the 3.5 MW server. My suggestion, convert the 3.5 MW server to a NS4 server. It would still be a PvP server and would be a natural progression just like when NS1 grew to NS2 to NS3. What about the people with chars on 3.5MW? many have lvl 40 chars that have been developed over time. We all know what it's like to have to start from scratch. Could characters be moved to another 3.5 server, or the vault as a whole to allow those people to keep their characters? If a second server could be added I would also suggest splitting the module between them in a manner similar to the hub system used in the past. One server could run the planar and other epic areas and one could run the lower level areas. NS4 is a great mod but the things that make it so good are also the things that create lag. Splitting the load could help reduce the dreaded lag monster as well as allow more people to enjoy Neversummer4. Well, I've used my 2 cents worth quota up for the next year. What thoughts do others have concerning this?

If any server is located offsite from where the current NS4 server is located, we'd have to do something like they do with NS3.5 and have a completely different playerbase there. Sharing the vault and database over a long distance just wouldn't be possible. Any clustering like we did before would have to be local to DD's current hosting.

Doing another cluster is something we're considering, but it's not a trivial amount of work. But, if the load continues as it is, we might have to do something...

Personally, I'd prefer to see the clustering over split servers. While I realize this would involve a great deal of work, I think that it would also allow a much greater expansion onto the server-unit as a whole, improving the already high level of quality we've grown accustomed to. Certainly, it would be nice to see bigger and bigger fights in the faction raids, etc.

Funny that the 3.5 server he mentions is the only PvP 3.5 server...

But then NS4 is the only true NS PvP server. :D

Well we have a couple of ways to do this.

If we put up a 2nd server here (money) The activity will die off come mid august(less then 30 days) from people going back to school.

The other consideration is the ns5 project and the launch of NWN2 in September. This will require a new server as well.

Its a tough call and like any good night club a line out the door keeps the people wanting in:)

Maybe we should get some bouncers then.

Or are they the DMs?

We do, if they are repeat offenders, we bounce even harder.
Serving NS4 proper as Lathander and Sleeth as Bahamut.

Yes, I'm a DM, but your build still sucks.

What I noticed is some players have two different logged accounts at one time. I don't think this is fair to other players who are waiting to login.

About splitting NS4 into different clusters like it was at the beginning: I would pledge against it. Relic wars wouldn't be as much fun.
Opening a second NS4 server wouldn't be a good idea either. On one would play one guild on the other another. It just wouldn't be the same.
I think, we have to learn to cope with the fact that NS4 is a heavily frequented server.

Closing the MW server wouldn't be nice too, for all those who like to play there. Even if they are few.

Just throwing out an idea here that I haven't seen proffered before. A setup like 3-towns has, Server A Full-PvP and server B PvP-Lite with the ability to portal between servers. The portaling takes as long as a normal transition.
I wasn't playing NS when it was clustered so I am not really sure if the next idea echoes that. Split NS4 into 2 or 3 pieces with a portal taking you to the next section (portal being a normal transition), would split the server load while keeping the continuitygoing. I understand that might create a problem if all toons decide to converge on Ave for some reason or another. But hey, these are just ideas. Ok Chase, time to come out and say everything is perfect and you wouldn't change anything except to give all toons +.5 nerf bats. LOL
