Saving but not Saved?

And guys, just so you know the facts:

The code to save your character on rest and on area transition is EXACTLY the same code used to save your character using the diary. There is absolutely nothing we can do about this, since it is something about the game engine itself that is causing the weird save issues. Having people complain about things we have no ability to change is pretty frustrating for us, too. If you want to complain, yell at Bioware.

Anyway, if you find that saving using the book is more reliable, then you already have your answer right there - use the book to save. I don't have much sympathy if you refuse to use the diary because you're too lazy to click one extra time on the dialog menu....

In the end, the best thing we can do to reduce/eliminate this problem is to make the server more stable. However, that costs a lot of money - we're providing all of this for free, and posts like this always come across as "you guys don't care about us! spend more money so we can have a more reliable free server to play on!", and that irks a little bit.

That said, we are working on it...and in the end, it's just gear guys. If you had fun getting it in the first place, why can't you have fun getting it again? Pretend you got hit by a rust monster or something....

Ok so why are guilds allowed a chest to help transfer gear if guild members are not allowed to get gear from the guild? This has nothing to do with metagaming if my guild is supposed to support new characters wishing to join. The lose of gear and xp is disapointing but I was not looking to get it replaced or even compensated for it. I was not even really complaining about the server itself and it's many crashes recently. I have considered donating and trust me if I get in a position where I can donate money for this great mod I will. My actual post was more directed towards the known problems with saving and the many issues it causes to new players and veterans alike.

LOL, I remember in PnP where a huge group of ours could take on devils but if they saw one little rust monster they all ran for cover.

I dont know why noone suggest's it but i havent lost a single item or any xp in a long time. Do to the sole reason i belive of my save process. First i rest then i use my journal, and then i hit the C key. Oh yes the glorious C key. It brings up your character sheet, and for some reason it makes the server remeber you??? I dont know why it works but it does, and i suggest it to everyone.

I used to think the glorious C key worked as well, but you must remember that to a big corporation like Bioware, C stands for communisim, and although it will seem like the xp is there when you hit the C key, hitting the C key sends a signal to Bioware and there is a percent chance that little commie gnomes from bioware HQ will sneak into your PC and steal XP from your character !!!! so the only true solution i have found that now works 100% is relogging (after using the book of course).

well i have to say ive had a gut full already......... i been gone a while from playing as many will tell u but fair DINKUM! tonight just now i lost an entire epic lvl and more xp + the money and gear off a toon which is an absolute joke. i might add i lost lvls on 3 other toons since i been back ! (less than a week)

Your chances of keeping new players who do all the right things ( itook your advice fatso) and still loose 30k - hours of work is about 0%.

I left the ice effreet - the whole time resting , logging booking and it all is gone joined 2 sl players in ice giants and we carved up i reverted all the way back

can someone explain to me how the %$^& this is fair , and yeah i know the we dont replace gear items or xp BS that ive heard over and over regardless of party witnesses etc

I might add its easy for ppl who can make lvl 40 char in 1 hit or get any item they want to say that. I been back less than a week and im sick of it already...

u guys need to make a decision shut the damn thing off till its stable, put the cluster back in or give ppl back the darn xp they work hours for IF and only IF they have 2 yes 2 or more witnesses ( whats wrong with that ?)

ATM it all just seems massiveley pointless to play on this server , and i know im not the only one its so frustration to loose xp on 3 toons in less than a week

ok so now ill wait for the well go play somewhere else line and prolly chases - i assure u this is being looked into .... later and i hope it dont happen to the rest of u !

We really are looking into this. Sorry for your xp loss - it's not like we're doing it on purpose or anything.

We'll let you know if we find what's causing it.

While I agree it is very frusterating. I am a new player to NS4, but I choose to stick with it. The main reason I stay is because of the summoning system. I've always loved summoner toons because I usually solo everything and a good summon makes life so much more enjoyable.

Losing XP and gear does suck though. I had 2-3 sets of full plate I never got to ID last night that I lost due to crashes. I don't know how much XP and gold went with it.

Maybe a script could be developed that would pause the server every 10-15 minutes and save everything during the pause. Not a perfect answer, but it could help.

What causes all the damned crashes anyway? Just a butload of scripts running and overloading the engine or the PC? NS3.5 never crashes (or very rarely) and it usually is running 20+ (often the max of 32) people on East.

Crashes are one of the reasons it's still Beta

Probably the mass of "stuff" going on. Also, some of the alterations made to Bioware's system don't fit perfectly yet. I've seen those non-fits cause the server to reboot itself several times.

Allright - i have to stick this here - not to complain but just to be spiteful and top all of your losses -- maybe even combine them all into one !

i was in zons leveling for nearly 3 hours and had a nice stash of gear too when bam ! there went nearly 70k xp and nearly 3 levels....i bs you not..

.. Oo.... i was from 2k from 27 and got rolled back to just above lvl 24... and taht is why i beg all of you until our dev's who do all they can with the time and resources they can spare for us can figure out the problem to rest, book and relog as often as you could

you may be wondering what i did after that: well i griped a little of course

but the night after it happened i cranked that toon up to lvl 31

Well, even if we weren't in beta (and arguably we shouldn't be any more), that doesn't mean that software bugs won't occur.

Anyway, point being: if anyone can give any clues to the commonality that's causing this problem so we can track it down, that's probably going to be the most helpful bit.

I lost only about 8k xp and a tagnar shield last night, and I got a set of Ragnar armor BACK after one crash... and the person i had given the armor to still had it (duplicated) yet I lost 7.5k of xp -- does this help at all? It seems the xp saving is lagging behind, and the inventory saving is splotchy (different toons being saved at different times). We were all booking and resting...

NOTE: In a crash that happened previous to the one that caused a loss, I lost nothing at all..

It took me an extra 30 mins to get to lvl32... and i was sooo close.

As for the 2 witnesses thing, I don't think that's enough, to avoid potential fake screenshots I'd think you should also have to:

-screenshot your character sheet,
-make sure to include the player list and some recent shouts logins/logoffs at the bottom in the shot,
-be sure to hold TAB down as you hit Printscreen with your two witnesses toons revealed in the shot,
-be sure your 2 party member witnessess do as well, and screenshot the result afterwards.

Also, who's paying the salary of the DM that's gonna spend countless hours going through sshot pms, and tracking down people in-game to issue them replacement xp?
