Donation Box Sign
Could we possibly get a sign by the Donation Box letting the new players know it is not a loot box. Something like "Take what you can use, Not what you can sell, Bring it back when you're through with it."
I felt a little frustrated on North when I put 3 pages of stuff in the DB and came back about 10 minutes later, only to find it had been cleaned out. I guess there is a chance that a whole bunch of new players came in during that 10 minutes. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . but, I doubt it since there were only about 5 people on.
I know a sign won't stop some players from emptying the DB, but it would at least let new players know they are expected to share.
This is just one of those pet peeves of mine.
Thanks for playing.

What I do...
I feel your frustration...
Of late, I only put in the DB every once in awhile now.
Due to this LOOTING of the DB, I have even seen players LOGIN toons after myself or others have been generous enough to put items in it, just to empty it..then log off and sell at a later time (I assume..sice no OTHER reason comes to mind).
...so what do I do now????
I (as i said before) only put stuff in the DB after doing some major runs and loaded down...but not lots!
Instead I hold onto what I dont sell and give (actually GIVE to a toon in need)...this way I know that the stuff isnt being sold off at first chance and the players who receive these items know it waas from me!
I started getting mad at the DB looting...and decided it wasnt worth getting mad about...I came up with a SOLUTION instead.

I'd have to say I disagree with the other posters here. To me, "donation" means "donation," plain and simple. If you put something in the donation box, you're effectively saying, "Here, I don't want this item. You can do whatever you want with it." Therefore, if someone takes all the items and sells them, that's fair.
Personally, I drop items in the DB as a method of repaying my dues for playing on NS. I've snagged lots of goodies from the DB for my toons, so I'm just returning the favor. The solutions that others have come up with are also reasonable. If you want to keep a mule character stocked with newbie gear, more power to you. However, as much as I'm willing to help new players, I'm not about to set myself up as a convenience store. I have seen several instances of new players presenting extensive shopping lists of gear they want or saying, "Don't you have anything better?" when I've gone through the effort of giving them equipment more than good enough to enable them to get better stuff on their own.
In my view, the DB is the best way to supply goods to newbies in a neutral fashion. Just my $1/50.

When i played on a server that had a DB I rarely ever put anything in it. But since you get 80% weight reduction bags i used to hang on to dorf gear etc and actually personally hand it to those in need everysooften. This was my way of stopping those who emptied the DB just to sell it on.

I very seldom drop anything in the DB. When I do, it is something like bandit scalps, something a new toon could use but is otherwise unsellable or very cheap. Nor do I hand out stuff while in NS. I prefer to help ppl that I run across out somewhere trying. With the essence quest, sewers, and revamped Tug'lik, it is easy to start a toon.

Yep. I got fed up a year or so ago, and I refuse to place anything in the donation box. Why? People selling the stuff to the hooker. I mean, come on,,, gold is needed, but not that much in the early game. By the time you need gold, you are able to get it yourself.
So, I do like Kell said he does... Pass out equipment on a case by case basis.

Just a few more thoughts on the matter. The decision to put stuff in the DB or not is up to each individual player. But even though having someone loot the DB may be annoying, what effect does that have on any of us?
There are tons of things people do on this mod that I find annoying, but none of them interfere with me directly. I keep playing and ignore them.
With regard to the DB, it's not the job of the admins or myself to police it, and it's also not my job to play sugar daddy to newbies.
Leave the DB the way it is. What's the harm in that?
Thanks for reading

This obviously is another one of those topics that brings out the extremists in some of us. I was just stating a personal pet peeve of mine and making a suggestion, not demanding action from anyone. I just placed a comment in the "Ideas and Suggestions" topic.
I usually play solo, so the benefits I receive from some generous players by way of the DB are very much appreciated. I, in turn, try to pass that generosity on by putting stuff in the DB myself. Players who like to party and/or are in guilds don't really need the help of the DB because they help each other get the equipment they need and want. The first toon solo without a DB is a bear. The rest come much more easily.
So, please put some good stuff in the DB every now and then (nothing restricted please, it just falls on the ground and can't be put back in the DB) and help me out.....................errrrrrr help new players out.

That's probably my biggest gripe - seeing level restricted items in the donation box. If you're big enough to use it, what the heck are you doing looking for handouts?Texkampe wrote:nothing restricted please, it just falls on the ground and can't be put back in the DB
As for putting up a sign, it wouldn't change anything. If you want to be sure that your donations get put to good use, then make sure to give them personally instead of dropping them in a box. Personally I only put stuff that can't be sold in the DB - any other gear I hand out is done personally.

One thing I used to do on old Pac with my lvl 40 was to get keeper ammy or some other such item that cant be sold but is very good for lvls 1-20 was to have these fun little treasure hunts throughout all of NS.
Like my favorite hiding spots was inside of GoN HQ inside of the desk just before the entrance. It was fun following the noobs around and giving hints everynow and then.
IMHO helping noobs always feels better when they earn it in some way, like just being polite, trivia, jokes, treasure hunts, ect... Just something special that makes the noob feel somewhat at home, know what I mean?

usually, I put stuff in the DB all the time. I know I start new toons all the time and if there were nothing in the DB, I'd be SOL without loggin out and gettin another toon of mine to troll for some stuff. Whenever I run to sunken, for instance, I drop 1 of every item I have found there in the DB and sell the rest. that way i make a good bit of gold and help out those less fortuneate (or less motivated it seems at times).
I do get annoyed when ppl loot the DB just to sell stuff off. But, I do know there have been times when I was in a huge hurry to get something that required cash (like porting to wherever), but I just loot/sell what I need and leave. But I do think there are some people that think the DB is just there to help them hoard gold.
I think it would be good if the value of items put in the DB could be scripted to zero after being put in there. That would eliminate the issue quite nicely. I don't know if this would be hard to code, but it sounds easy in any case.
