New to NS

Post by sep caldessian »

hi i am sep. i have been recruited to come and check out the new NS4. i hope to be an active member of the community, and a worthy companion in-game. There is a lot of info here to digest at once, with the factions, deities, and restrictions unique to NS4. any tips for the new guy? thanks!

Go SL!!!!

hehe just kidding. what i sugest is look over the factions and find one that suports your favorite class and race. then just dive in. Everyone is still learning and from what ive seen very helpful to each other.

E komo mai.

Most new players end up in Last Alliance/Shadow Legion/Ancient Ones or Ragnar's Kin (but you prolly have to play a dorf) because they allow for the most leeway in character development (i.e. no restrictions on classes and some restrictions on race).

My advice? Read up on the info and do what moki said. Choose one and have fun! People on NS are generally welcoming and generous

And remember, there is no hard and fast rules when it comes to character development. Do what you feel like doing!

thanks for the quick replies!

im not even sure what class/race im gonna pick. probably just log in and see what there sint a lot of. im sure there arent many harper scouts out there so i may do that for flavor...or cleric...or ranger...etc. i have no clue.

character development im not worried about. im a seasoned NWN roleplayer and i let the corse of my RP in-game dictate my progression in feats/skills/classes etc.

i was more interested in learning about the jobs fucntion, quests and the like. i guess it will be clearer once i get in-game. look like a fabulous job of balancing all classes and races, and should the gameplay follow suit, i may have a new PW to call home.

well i got home last night and went straight to the game. i was excited to try everything out, so i was taking my time deciding my characters and everything. it took me nearly a half hour to create a character all the way through without the server crashing, but i stuck with it. eventually i came to realize that the wait was worth it. the cutscenes are pretty well done (although a little too long, imo, for the amout of dialogue/action involved) and the faction ambassadors were setup and characterized very well. there wasnt much in the way of roleplay available, others were calling my character's name even though i had never told them, using party chat as OOC way way way too much, shouts are ridiculous (had to turn them off, hope i didnt miss anything important) and should be restricted to moderators/DMs (again, imo).

all in all i like the setup, where items are pricey, so you have to work up to a decent weapon and armor, not start in platemail and greatsword. A lot of the places were empty (i started in the G-town for wizards) but im sure they will come to life before too long. the area building is very nice, i found myself walking around the city looking at the architecture and all.

combat...well...im not sure how the spawn system works (i think its level based) but i found my character at level 1 facing "impossible" rated enemies very close to town. im sure that some higher level spawned and left them there, but who knows.

shopping...well i like the store idea of try before buying, but i seriously, passionately disagree with the outside merchants who sell via dialogue menu and not the defaul inventory. i hate having to click 3 times just to look at another kind of weapon. i hate having to wait 10 minutes for someone to break conversation with the merchant so i can view the inventory. its not RP-geared at all (does anyone walk in to a store and have to wait in line to see whats sold?) but im sure you all have had your reasons. from the work done in this module, i can tell the devs are a brilliant bunch who take pride in their creations.

so in sum, despite server issues, beta status, no roleplayers, and the other qualms listed above, ill be back. i really dig this place overall, and im sure once things are rolling for a while, and people have levels, the roleplay will come.

Sep, first off --Welcome to Neversummer.

Remember, everything you post here the Devs will read. As Beta progresses all opinions will help the fine tuning of NS4.

IN time when the crashes stop, the bugs get wiped out and the players learn more the mod will be like NS3 and one of the most unforgetable mods out there.

Thank you for taking time for your comments. ;)

my pleasure mz!

being a former server admin and current forums host there is nothing worse than hearing "this sucks" with no explanation. im not claiming anyone is doing that, but i like to give my honest opinion on things.

as the characters shape the story in-game, so should the players shape the module on the forums. i intend to be doing both on a regular basis. i have no problem working through bugs, as long as they dont cripple my entertainment of the module.

so far, the module itself is spot on (for beta, of course) so once roleplay is widely practiced (read: after players get their characters some levels), the real fun will begin. its typical for a newly opened server to be flooded with powerlevelling before the bulk of the players start to RP, so im just gonna ride the wave out till we hit the beach :D.

aside: is there a character per player limit in effect?

Nope, no limit otherwise Nost and I would be outa luck lol.

As far as RP goes, Neversummer is a pretty unique place. While RP is very encouraged the ability to abstain is allowed to all players. you may find that some you meet have this odd disorder in which they uncontrollably blurt out odd sounds and phrases "bbiab, or afk - phone, and even Ah PwnEd j00 2 D maxz0r" Our physicians are working on that last one.

An oddity and nothing you need to worry unduly about. And some are completely new to RP and do not follow some of the same rules you may be used to. Oh well, I ramble. Welcome to NS and hope ya like it well enough to stay.
