What's really going on with NS development?

Post by i.nightowl »

I get that it is free. I get that it is only a beta. What I don't get is why any and all information comes in from the General Discussion forum and is therefore rumor or hear-say. Why is it that no solid information regarding timelines, in-game changes or anything for that matter comes from the developers themselves (the last news posting was Aug. 19th). Is it too unreasonable to be thrown a crumb every now and then that has more substance than "Soon?"
Is it not funny how things, change...

Asked and answered?

When it's done/polished enough to put into the live test version, it goes in.

The way I see it, the devs have 3 options for announcing information about updates.

1. Say nothing until the update is ready to go live.
Pros : We get pleasantly suprised when an update goes in.
Cons : Some people get cranky because they do not know what is happening.

2. Say vague things like 'soon'.
Pros : We get pleasantly suprised when 'soon' finally becomes 'now'.
Cons : Some people get cranky because they know what is happening but they do not know when.

3. Specify a date which may or may not be accurate.
Pros : We get a date to look forward to.
Cons : Regardless of how many disclaimers a date is given about its accuracy, some people get cranky if a release date slips.

All options end up with cranky people but option 1 takes the least time away from actually developing the updates. Seems to me that option 1 is the best way to go.

a tip to all the people who get cranky about hearing the word 'soon':
If we feel development takes too long, maybe we ought to do more active testing as players.
It benefits both devs and players. The more usefull input the devs get the better, that plus providing them fast feedback thru bugreports is what makes software testing & development go faster. Which means we'll get ns4 official that much faster. On the other side, even if you don't find any bugs or things to report, you'll have learned alot more about the mod by actively testing, tinkering around & experimenting than by making yet another clone of a powerbuild which has been tested out to death by all those who copied it before. And the stuff you learn about the mod is the only thing you'll still have when the mod goes official.

example:
I wanted to play an arcane spellcaster, but didn't want sorcerer, because i wanted to try out every spell at least once, so i took generalist wizard. Yes i threw away the chance of taking the 1 cheesy paladin level, but it allows me to test nearly all arcane spells.

HuH!? what u tlaking about narglieh?

anyways.. most of those rumours and hearsay and such are bits of info that have leaked out from consistant badgering and being an awesome annoyance to the devs... or something like that...
sometimes it's just stuff they made to to shut up the person bothering them....
which i suppose is rightfully deserved...

if you really want a way to justify yourself... go play some other servers and wait till NS4 beta is farther along... play these servers looking for the pros and cons, then post in the ideas & suggestions forums about your findings and say what good ideas they had on thier server which may or may not be implemented here.

you arent going to be hung drawn and quartered for trying out a new server... and if your frustrated w/ NS4 yo umind as well channel your anger into a server other than us... as we have enough of our own apparently.
Type post, tab tab enter, wait 4page 2 load, shift+tab tab enter, REPEAT!!!

Personaly i think if the devs gave the community more info, they would get more info back.
like what they want tested... tell the community a day before you put in an update, or at least make a post with most of the major changes. Make an official post of when you think the new lvl20+ areas will be in. Dont ever say "soon"... at least say how much of it you got done...
Feedback to the community will lead to feedback from the community.

If all you guys are getting now is "omg this is lame" and "omg thats sweet" then the most likely reason for that is that all you guys tell us is "omg server reset" in the in-game server message window :P
