Alarms
Alarms
There should be some option you could turn on that every time a hostile enters your home town, you get a warning. This would make faction PvP much more common, cities safer for lowbies and it would keep raiders on their toes. I would love to participate in defense of my faction, but I can't sit at entrance 24/7 and wait for ppl to come raidin'.

I agree there should be some sort of alarm.
I actively participate in the defense of Daeron, and find it quite fun to help the city out. I don't know about the other factions, but NC has it easy being that there is only 1 path into Daeron. While killing rats and such on that path, I am also watching out for hostiles.
Factional PVP is a great way to bring the community together, since it is essentially a mutually agreed upon form of fighting (unlike the okie unwanted PK type). When you attack a city (Daeron, for instance), you should be forewarned that there will be defenders waiting. I know on several occasions there have been angry attackers who were killed by CLAD, not knowing why (cough Sofaking cough).
So yes...Alarms and factional should be encouraged.

But, it's such a draining job that, until you've DMed on an NWN server yourself, you the playerbase, have got to cut the DMs some slack. - Flailer
Hey this is an easy one, its already in place and working the way it should.
Its called other players in the faction. Look closely at the backstory, while much of the content involving the completion of the story is still awaiting implentation its fairly obvious that other players would be the prefered method of alarm.

Other players is the best way yes, but how do you know who's your faction or not, or wether they are high enough lvl to come help? Its not like you can just sit there with the player list open sending tells to everyone on the list.
Perhaps if there was at least some list (a bulletin board) that people could examine to see just who is able/willing to help out would help.
My first thought was to have some item you could activate, it would go through a list of those who signed up as city defenders, and send a tell to those who were online. The problem here is obviuosly false alarms. But maybe something could be hooked into the OnDamage of the NPCs. Have a buffer period, a cool-down period, required between firing of the OnDamage before new tells were sent out.

I'm not sure if its possible, but perhaps you can give the people who accept the guard job with their faction an item which will sound the alarm and allow them to teleport back to the city when there is an attack underway. It'd probably be a pain to code, but it'd increase number of faction defenders no end.

bah, any level char can defend their city. all they have to do is make sure they are bound there, find the biggest group of gaurds, and shoot them with a little bow and arrow. then all they need is to run a route that picks up the most NPC gaurds to follow them right into the fight. sure u might lose some xp but if u don't kill a gaurd then they will kill you and you are free to respawn to watch the carnage ensue. i know fighting 10 or more guards is a pain.
