artifacts, a nice way to boost pvp action

Post by nargileh »

Ok lemme introduce the 'artifact' think of an item or piece of equip which is unique in the realm, and would be scripted with following rules:
- if the player dies he drops the artifact to the floor
- a player cannot pick up more than 1 artifact
*edit* if a player holding an arti should stay offline for too long, return the arti to some high level monster or some other active player.
example:

a single pair of haste boots in the realm scripted with these rules.
imagine the fighting it could trigger. Spoken in character: i'd kill for those boots*grin*
A bounty system would also give pvp a boost while policing players who 'grief' too much ingame. They would acumulate bounty over time as they piss off other people so they'll eventually get hunted by bigger fish attracted by the bounty/loot ;)

Indeed. I also like the idea of the single haste boots idea. I'm opposed to having haste items in game, but I think 1 pair would be ok...also, I'd love to see some of the fights those boots would start!

You could apply this type of idea towards several different item mods, particularly the immunity items. Maybe make an item for each of them, like crit hits or a freedom of movement item..

Also, it would be nice if there was some way (maybe an item with unique power) that you could get a list of the current item holders. This would allow you to find a certain item you want and who has it (an item of such prestige should generate talk about the person who has it).

The only problem I can think of is this: What if the person who has an item kills another with an item? Does that oblect just lay there ntil someone else grabs it? Heh, Imagine a level 1 running around with the only pair of Haste Boots, even if they couldn't use them that would be kind of funny.

5 minutes and 5 crashes later we have 5 pairs of haste boots and maybe a bunch of honest players with corrupted characters.

Though solvable with scripting, there's still the engine level exploits...as Mr. Shadow put well in the fuzzy past: "There's a point where fixing all the engine problems leaves you without a game" (in that fixing many engine problems the only solution is removing a gameplay option).

I don't think it'll be possible as long as we're Gamespy listed and open to everyone. We'll see what we can do.

Hmm don't blame me for bioware's issues. IMHO I think i should do bioware the favor of helping them in their testing department, right now i'm testing the next generation of DSL for alcatel and well no point explaining how testing games ought to be more exciting than getting a modem in showtime

This might work better as something handled outside the existing item system. Transfer of the 'artifact' could occur on kill credit. Suicide/logging off/uncreditable kills could spawn a placeable that transfers the effect to the nearest monster/player on a heartbeat.

Perhaps you could post some links to muds/pws that use a similar ideas, nargileh? Develop what you think this should look in NS4 a bit more?

Perma-haste breaks PW's. It's right up there with immunity items. They both severly mess up the game. Then again so does HiPS, Dev Crit, Bigbies, etc etc.....

Haste is even worse since now Monk speed stacks with it.

Kinda makes those spell duration changes meaningless too.

So yeah, perma-haste = bad.

If you want to spice up PvP, add a scoreboard or bounty system. Or make the death penalty from PvP mean something rather than a quick trip back to your bind point. Perhaps add in the chance to drop a random item or 2 you get PK'd.

One PW that I used to play on had a 33% chance of EACH item dropping onto a lootable corpse (along with all your gold!). You also lost 1/2 a level if you respawned (I think).

I certaintly wouldn't want an major gold/xp lose due to PvP...even if it IS a PvP server.

*groans* I got killed by a lower level xter last night. To lose 1/2 a level and gold would be just an added blow. Oh the humiliation...curse that endless array of spells that were thrown at me last night!

Making the death penalty more severe for PVP will only increase the level of grief PVP, something the server already has enough off. Bad idea imho. But I agree that a scoreboard and bounty system would be great features to have.

Would it be possible to check who initiates the combat in PvP? Then have a penalty for the person who started the combat if they die. It would be a problem for lowbies who are defending the town against invaders. Maybe if you're in your town, you don't get a penalty for dying if starting the combat.

Just a random thought thrown out there.

here is an idea to make stuff interesting. after pvp combat and the loser is laying dead on the ground, they cannot be raised or ressurected. instead make them respawn at no penalty to a random spawn point somewhere in ns. that will make ppl actually make an intellectual decision on whether or not they want to enter into the combat. it also will stop the mass mobbing everyone that passes thru a screen just because they can syndrome that is happening.
when death comes for you and you are not afraid, if he asks why tell him you met me

more severe? that would imply that it is severe now. in actuality, unless something has changed, there is NO penalty whatsoever for losing in pvp.
