"RPers" dont whien ans ask too much. we dont try and force you to RP, and we dont demand a fugue plane at all either. The Devs have sed many a time they want the server to cater to both types of players so what is the problem with putting some effort into a name?
and if we're gonna have to listen to excuses plz try harder than this :Billiard wrote:besides who knows what the "right" rp names would be like - for example, you could end up with a dwarf that had an elven name. Is that a bad RP name, or do you just have to have a back story with it? The serious folks on the server will tend to work together, and whatever norms get established there will probably carry on. If someone has a weird name - don't play with em if you don't like it! They'll figure it out eventually.
Sorry Throst I guess I didn't highlight my main point - but there is a whole lot (like 60 years worth) of research that shows group norms are even more powerful than setting rules and guidelines. This is no lame excuse - this is reality. If you want to get people to do something that the majority wants, then merely exclude those that don't conform. Of course if the majority don't care, as I think was the case with NS3, then there are no set group norms and therefore nothing for people to conform to.
while i like roleplaying very much i think alot of the color of ns3 was derived from folks who had some pretty oddball names. The Okies (hated but loved by some) have some of the oddest RP names around (the fact that they are filling a role is very debatable lol). And nicknames can come from some pretty odd places, one of my real life nicks is Mogilla Gorilla, or Grape Ape. I had a friend we called Radar and most of the members of my family have nicks that relate to inanimate objects (Beanstalk, Melonhead, crow etc). the alias a person goes by can come from just about anywhere and who knows? there may well be burritos in NS4 (<-- obvious poor attempt at a joke dont flame the burrito comment) the point is, that if it helps you roleplay, try to think of these oddball names as nicknames that these characters go by.
Personnally, as long as a character isnt named Xr4tI Space Modulator (version 1.6a) or some such obvious anachronism then Im happy as a pig in... mud.

I am the terror that flaps in the night!!!
ok this comment is going to attract a lot of anger, but here it is.
besides names like Burrito Supremo and Big Mac with a Side of Fries, the names that kinda annoy me (not enough that I won't play with a player but enough that I don't take them seriously as a roleplayer) are the ones that are something like Gil the Tank, or Gil the Rogue, or Gil the Fighter, Gil the Cleric, Gil the Wizard, Gil the Barbarian. This is a purely roleplaying stylistic pet peeve of mine, because those titles are D&D game mechanics and have nothing to do with how characters identify themselves in game. A wizard doesn't go around saying, "Hi, I'm a wizard," but they may go around and say "Greetings, I am Gil, mage of the third class of the Order of the Restless Dragon." Now that name is a little over the top and perhaps wizard and sorcerer and maybe even cleric are acceptable titles. But the less specialized, more generic classes like rogues, fighters, and barbarians really don't have anything that ties them together and identifies them as a group and those titles are purely metagame. anyways, don't let that deter you from naming your chars like that, just don't expect me to take you quite as seriously as an RPer.

In case you missed it. One more time ...
This is an Action not a RP (at least for now )
Sheesh c'mon.

Lore - you should reread his last line. He was not forcing any beliefs, just stating that if you use those kinds of names he wouldn't take you seriously as a RPer - something that Burrito Supreme probably doesn't care about anyway!
Yes this is an action Mod, but there seems to be a movement toward RP with NS4. I think people should consider this as they create their new characters - but you don't need it to dictate what you do necessarily.

well, i don't really pick a rpish type name for my chars.........just usually something to define them when people see me online.
eg Erurg Forestwalker - ranger
Erurg Shifty - shifter
Erurg Battlefist - fighter
Erurg Magickbinder - mage etc etc
i'm sorry but i don't speak elvish or dwarven or gnomish....but if you wanna name your chars and speak like that on ns4, then go ahead, just don't expect me to understand you and don't get offended when i respond to your "hail! how art thou?" with "heyas".

geez Lore I though rpers where oversensitive. What is all this talk about forcing people to do something??? We aint saying this is a rp server. It is rp based. I would just like to see names that make fantasy sence. What does a name have to do with your playstyle? Answer is nothing. I love to PG just as much as RP. Lore you seem to have a problem with people that dont think your way saying you are being forced to do something. You have an opinion, I understand and acknowledge it. And I am not saying anything is wrong with it. But you are saying something is wrong with my opinion. I personally HATE HCR servers. I perfer action servers. I think having better names enhances the game. The silly names take away from rpers. The Rp name DO NOT take away your action or PGing. PG is lots of fun. Dont get to flaming or into a rper vs pger thing. Opinions are ok really Both sides have had good points so far. This thread is about names only not playingstyles.
