The painful days of a dex char
I've been working on a dex char in the past hearing that they are so painful to level. Well, I can only confirm that.
I've also tried spellcasters and str fighters and they have just a so much easier time.
The worst is the rogue, IMHO. While potentially a good class, it is just outperformed by far. Don't get me wrong, I love the rogue, it is a fun class to play, sneaking around and hitting somebody in the back. It's exciting, because you can try take on harder guys and then run when they notice you.
It's sad that this class doesn't have more potential, it's BAB progression is not so good, it has no summons to help it out (and maybe provide sneak attack decoys), and a lot of stuff is not sneakable (undead, constructs, formians, ...). Traps are not very efficient in killing anything and give no exp. When you can't find a party your level, life as a rogue is hard to say the least.
I don't know how your experience is with the rogue. Maybe I'm not playing it to its full strength. Usually, I'm going to an area with sneakables, sneaking in, hitting a mob trying to kill it and then run when the mob comes.

My dex rangers lvl up pretty quickly(gained 7 lvls today, from 3-10) until they hit giants, and then everything grinds to a halt. But the no xp from traps is annoying. Still, minor fire traps seem to do a good amount of dmg, and you need no training in the skill to make them, which is good.

i tried a dexer rogue to lvl by myself and it was stupid how hard it was for a lvl 6 to kill gargoyles
then i made a different dex build. i managed to get high dmg with high ac and could solo nearly all of giant mountain at 13.
just try and think of a dex build that doesnt need sneak attack to do damage. i did and its better than basically all other melee types
(cept for the overpowered cleric)

Re: The painful days of a dex char
IMO you need to play shifter a bit to see what's hard. Dex chars are not that hard to level since not all dex chars are rogues obviously. Besides with proper multiclassing rogues can have easy time leveling. Go 16 cleric first and then start taking rogue or something. Make 16 cleric 4 monk 20 assasin stack some divine power and just kill everything with 9 attacks per round with double kamas. This way you also get boatload of sneaks coming out of hide.Metavirulent wrote:I've been working on a dex char in the past hearing that they are so painful to level. Well, I can only confirm that.

At level 9 clerics and fighters are at an equal number of attacks. You don't get an extra attack unless appropriate for your new BAB.JesterOI wrote:Didn't the devs remove the extra attack from Divine Power?
I've only tried the spell at level 9, am I missing something?

dex fighters are very good, althoguh u pretty much have to go 2weap fighting... cuz thier main goal is to try and outlast a regular tank by having higher ac and hitting w/ 2 weapons to slowly wittle down thier hp...
it's a lot harder to make a good dex character than a good str character....

I personally don't like dualwielding.
Huge ac loss from being able to use shields and lower overall AB (-2).
A shield is so much more useful inho.
+6 ac with a towershield at 16 gear.
then there's the added resistance and immunities.
You lose just too much dualwielding for it to be of any use other than RP purposes, same with 2handed weapons, +50% str mod damage bonus isn't worth shield loss as far as i'm concerned.

tell me.. .when you are a rogue or an assasin.. and you are sneaking up on someone.. adn dont stand too much in a 1v1 fight... and the first blows u make are vital to if you survive.. tell me...
woudl you rather have an extra chance to smack the bejeebus outta someone?
not only is that 2 extra attacks, but if you have sneak attack taht's a lot of Xtra dmg you can be doing.
-2 ab for 2 more attacks is worth it in many situations, u just need to knwo how to balance it out.

I love dual-wielding. My first NWN char was a dual-wielding rogue. I don't consider it an AC loss. I consider shields an AC bonus.
I dual-wield katanas on my weapon master. mowing things down is fun.
