Character names
Character names
Since NS 4 is going to be rp based I have a suggestion/request. Can there please be a rule about how players name there characters. I have seen some realy stupid names like:
Burrito Supreme
President George Carlin JR
mighty monkey
iam dA man
iama pimp
super fly
the big cheese
You get the point, the players are good but the names lol come on guys
I saw a name that was so long it took up 3 lines before. That is not a name, that is a message.......You can still powergame so please let boycott the riduculous names.

I wouldn't mind if people talked in character. For me, the game is a lot more fun if I feel like I'm part of a world instead of a place for killing things.
I'm not saying the DMs are gonna start saying things like "Galstaff, you have entered the door to the North, you are now by yourself standing in a dark room. The pungent smell of mildew emanates from the wet dungeon walls."
Nor do I think players should be like "I am Galstaff, sorcerer of light!"
But with the mix of RPers and PGers in NS4 combined with the increased emphasis on story everyone says there is going to be I do forsee a whole lot of the following:
Nightblade: WHERE ARE THE CHEETOS?!?!
Graham: They're right next to you
Galstaff: I cast a spell
Nightblade: Where's the mountain dew?
Graham: In the fridge, DUH!
Galstaff: I wanna cast a spell!
Nightblade: CAN I HAVE A MOUNTAIN DEW?!?!
Graham: Yes, you can have a mountain dew just go get it
Galstaff: I can cast any of these right, on the list?
Graham: Yes, any of the first level ones
Nightblade: I'M GOING TO GET A SODA, ANYONE WANT ONE?!?! HEY GRAHAM I'M NOT IN THE ROOM RIGHT?
Graham: What room?
Galstaff: I want to cast MAGIC MISSILE
Nightblade: THE ROOM WHERE HE'S CASTING ALL THESE SPELLS FROM!

If NS 4 is rp based and some will rp how do you take someone seriously if they say there name is burrito supreme. PW action does not have to mean PW "stupid name ok". I mean no one is forcing you to rp or talk in character etc, but taking out the nonsence. I mean is this server rp based or not? rp based does not mean forced rp old english talk etc.
The fraction have back stories. I mean did the devs go through all that trouble to name everything and have background stories for nothing? Why name an area anything but area 1 area 2 area 3 etc. No i see names of lands, citys, dungeon etc.
Tags are ok, just the really dumb names really have to go.
hail lad i am Devlin dwarf of the RK clan
Hi my name Burger King from shadow legion
SL? i will kill u Burger King
Not if my wife Dairy Queen has anything to say about it
Aint that just the dumbest thing u ever heard? And you know people will do it. If i took all the time to do all the background stuff and have it rp based i would be real mad at people that name themselves this.

mmm... if I want to have a name burrito supreme, my name is going to be burrito supreme. I dont care, its just a name. Big deal. What kind of name is Nameless... hey... Nameless? hey... burrito supreme? who cares. Yes it is RP based now, but if I was an elf named burrito supreme, then I can still be an evil penny stealing elf... its not your name that counts I think, its the kind of personality you play as. Im burrito supreme and I am a big dumb half-orc. WHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

NS4 isn't an RP server. It isn't a powergamer server. It's a server for pretty much any play style. I was playing on a server once when I was forced to ditch a character because the DM thought the name wasn't realistic enough. Restricting names is really unnecessary unless the names are offensive.
If you tilt your head far enough and squint hard enough, anything becomes as simple or complex as you'd like--regardless of whether it is or not. -- A lesson learned from Stephen Wolfram's A New Kind of Science
If the name dont count that why try to think of something like cheeseburger as a name. Just take the name giving to you at the make of your character.
Sorry to the player that player Burrito Supreme btw. He is a good player. Sorry to use you has an example. lol

most people have a standard name which they build off of. Burrito.
Supreme Burrito = best char?
Tiny Burrito = halfling?
Burrito Bash = tank?
It doesnt really matter IMO. If your really worried about char names that much, then go to a PW story or something.... no offense meant toward the WC of course.

This is something that I agree with, but it's not something I or any of the Devs would be inclined to enforce at all. It's kind of like the Bill of Rights - you have the right to do a lot of things that common sense and common decency would forbid, and just because the majority of people agree doesn't mean we need to "legislate" it.
I would hope that people would create names for their characters that are at least nominally fantasy-oriented, and we most likely will change names that are too long or violate the rules, but if somebody really wants to name their character "Burrito Supreme", they're welcome to. I just wouldn't expect them to be taken very seriously.
What I can say, however, is that in NS4, we will hopefully have enough DMs around to monitor the shout channel and ensure that it doesn't get out of hand. NS4 will be a lot more strict with regard to what is allowed on Shout, simply because it is the most "invasive" of the chat methods. Players shouldn't have to turn off the whole shout channel just to avoid spam.

so now this has changed from names to PG/RP? Meh... but seriously I dont think your name much matters unless, as Joran stated above, it goes against the rules or something. You dont have to be like everyone else with names like "Falynilate Bhantingalis" or w/e Thats just silly. I personally think that your name with a descriptive word does fine... take these as example..
Delvin the Arcane

I take no offense at you using my name as an example, Devlin. I'm not in the habit of making characters with stupid names but, I was enjoying a burrito supreme for lunch at the time and figured that sounded better than the name that was generated for me....Torne Ash.

besides who knows what the "right" rp names would be like - for example, you could end up with a dwarf that had an elven name. Is that a bad RP name, or do you just have to have a back story with it? The serious folks on the server will tend to work together, and whatever norms get established there will probably carry on. If someone has a weird name - don't play with em if you don't like it! They'll figure it out eventually.
