I'd say smart fighters have a chance. Properly prepared fighters can do in a mage in NS4... unless the mage is more prepared. :) Monks (and to a lesser extent rogues) are the real mage-bane though.

eg. with +3 as the 'common' gear (even though it looks like it'll be rare). a mage can cast premon/greater stoneskin which STACKS. first the fighter has to get thru the premon, then the stoneskin. then the mage can decided which out of the countless number of ways to deck the fighter who'll be standing there doing no damage at all.........any form of death magic, evocation spells, igms, horrids etc etc. then in epic levels, whats the point of a fighter? there's epic warding and mage armor, so the mage can tank even better than them.(and MA walking around with wiz/sorc pms, oh great....other factions, what other factions?)
and lets not start on clerics, who just decimate low magic worlds, they can melee better than fighters, and cast almost as well as mages.

have you played with SoU/hotu mages? you can't even get close to them

taut, 'hurting them' becomes trivial, they'll have mucho mucho concentration (even if you managed to sv on said spells above, which won't happen because you'll have low svs...)
knockdown might work, but then again, taking a monk lvl for instance negates that chance (discipline score there). oh, and you still can't hurt them!
do you realize how high mages damage potential is? how many spells they can chain?
even monks with their super speed, and high spell resist can do NOTHING> 2 mord's, no more probs with spells resisting.

i disagree,
my monk in ns 3 stands there while mages cast away at her and nothing. i walk up and taunt and start whacking away.
and if we wanna take the rp stance. we low level fighters wanna kill low level mages so they dont grow up to be big mages

oh and the whole idea of a faction, is not to be a joan of arc and take on the evil yourself, its to work together as a team. ie:

the bards buff and snipe while the druid slows and trafic directs the enemy while the rangers charge in and mow them down.

is that pvp? for me, it usually vs monks, 2 mords + bigby's crushing hand + poke fun at them + igms spam = dead monk.
and as for teams, you can team all you want, but if it's against a team of mages with imm crit ability, what's the point?

As i said in an earlier topic, if the fighter gets the crit immune before lvl 20 by taking pale master classes, he'd need 5 wiz/10 pm, guess how much ab he loses? (8 ab and at least 1 attack/round) that or take it in epic losing a LOT of epic feats since you're taking 15 classes in the epic lvls (hoorah for waiting till lvl 35 for crit immune, kinda like those dragon shape builds)
BTW, go play BoW, you'll quickly realize there's close to NO difference between a lvl 40 mage and a lvl 20 mage (unless they get 10 PM for crit immune or epic warding the only good epic spell, cept maybe dragon knight's fear, but that's a semi-low DC)
last BTW, if mages damage shields are the mage's main source of damage, i'm gonna puke i swear, i can't stand another disabling 100% of the time mage build

dond.... obviously you've never encountered a compliment of assassins with a full compliment of invisa scrolls and dispell scrolls... chances are, you'd be paralyzed before you cast a spell.... thats what im going to dread when im playing as a mage....

plain and simple, mages ARE supposed to be more powerful than fighters at higher levels. but that doesn't mean a fighter can't be useful against a mage. get right up next to a mage and interrupt all their powerful spells. another thing noone seems to remember is that all of the uber area effect spells mages used in NS3 will now have friendly fire, so that means if you can get within sword swinging range you are also out of horrid wilting's range (unless you have a kamikaze mage on your hands
). if you get bigbied, use a ranged weapon. 95% of characters in the PnP game carry around both ranged and melee weapons, regardless of their particular specialty. the point is, if you are a one trick pony then there are going to be plenty of people who can kill you, but be versatile and you will stand a much better chance over all. or make a party of five different one trick ponies and you will be able to handle any mage
