Hide in plain sight

Post by srbraith »

Im a level 7 rogue/level 1 shadowdancer. I was under the impression that for Hide in Plain site when you are under stealth mode you get sneak attacks...Well, im not getting any sneak attacks in stealth mode. They are just regular attacks....Am I missing something here? Can someone enlighten me? Is this a bug?

When u hide in plain sight for the first attack aginst target it should be a sneak attack and then 'your position is revealed' if u are having problems try attacking from behind as this is always a sneak attack weather using HiPs or not, of course this may just be the result of some HiPS tweaking recently done by the devs, in which case i wish they would have a forum keeping the players up to date with each change/update/new version.. and what they are changing..

maybe its just me but it seems sneak attack used with HIPS only works with melee weapons and not range

You need to be within a certain distance to the target for sneaks with ranged weapons. It's further away than melee distance, but you won't be getting them if you are something like 10 body lengths away (something you pretty much have to experiment with to get a feeling for it).

I had someone attacking me recently (this week) using HiPS and a sling - the "sneak attack" message was coming up and the bonus to damage confirmed it.

It might be possible the last time you tried it, the character you went up against had enough spot/listen to clock you, but I think you would have seen the "you've been revealed" message... grabbing a willing victim and testing it out at various distances should sort things out.

I vaguely remember someone posting that you may need to hit hide a couple times to get it to work properly - might want to try that out too.

seems like sneak attack with a range weapon is working fine but it seems that I cant sneak attack if Im more than 10 ft. away...(I dont know how you can measure that...lol...or 5 or 6 char. distances away).

I think the official distance is 30' you have to be within to get a ranged sneak attack. This isn't very far, only 10 yards, or the height of about 5-6 average humans.

I'm not sure what the radius is on Dragon Fear, but that looks to be about 20-30' to me on screen. Experiment on cows and chickens and boars that aren't hostile to get a feel for the distance you need.

I don't have any concrete evidence on this but I have played a Rogue/Archer before.

First off, you do have to be pretty close to get a sneak attack, like, close enough almost for melee. Secondly, for HIPS, yes, once you attack your position is revealed and you must again make a successful hide. Critters with True Site, like dragons for instance, and or with a good spot/listen skill will be able to spot you even when you are hidden. And lastly, you still are put through a Hide/Move Silently, skill check when using HIPS.

Some of these things may be effecting your sneak attacks and or the reason you are being spotted.

What I did was summon a shadow and let him get the critters attention, sneak around the critter in question and start pummeling him with arrows...my sneak attack increased considerably. Of course this was in a single player mod so im not sure how the calculations are in NS.

Good Luck, Rogue archers are fun to play.

are you sure? i had a rouge trying to kill me... kept popping in and out of thin air with HiPS and i could have sworn i saw "Sneak Attack" pop up here and there

If sneak attack is gone... i think ill take that as a good reason to quit =/

yet another ability down the drain! go go skilless hack and slash!

I can confirm that rogue shadow dancers keep their sneaks with hips. You do have to disengage combat and rehide to get another sneak; and missile sneak is not as obvious as melee sneak... range is important. I would add my voice to the crys of anguish if this were ever taken away from this class.

well sneak is only supposed to work when the person you are fighting isent focused on you...
you cant sneak attack someone thats activly attacking you unless you fade away, pop up, and attack again...

but sometimes a fighter will suceed in initiative roll and hit you first, and since he is already fighting, you get no sneak (at least, im prety sure he gets an initiative roll =o)

also, when he is attacked the nwn engine automaticly attacks back

Sneak works best with a party... when the enemy is attacking your friend, you land heavy blows
