The pvp in and of itself isn't the problem; it works on some other servers. It's the *players* doing the pvp; for those with an extremely selective memory, it's mostly very high-level types blasting very low-level types for no reason whatsoever, other than the lame "it's RPing" or "they were a hostile faction" excuse.
I had that experience just today. I said "hello" and kept on going; the other player (an Okie, wouldn't you know) chased after me, thwacked me once, and I died. I'm sure the Okie thought he was the funniest little boy in the world, but all I was thinking was "oh yeah, this *really* adds to game play - not!"
The end result of this kind of infantile behavior - and it is infantile, no matter what these people say - is that it'll drive new players off the server. If that's what you want, well then, that's exactly what you'll get - an exclusive club of annoying dweebs and the people who're too powerful for them to attack. New guys and gals will get on, get thumped by someone just because they happened to meet them on the road, and say "forget this - I play to have fun, not to be target practice for some lamer".

This is all playre differentiation. FOr example, I've accidently killed some chars in NS that happened to get hit by call lightnings. when that Happens I apologize, and try and give them money to make them feel bettter about it. On the other side, I've also been attacked by low lvls, and at that point, I think its okay to kill the noob, but I also don't put it in their face.
I've also killed some people accidentally, and I think an easier way to solve this is to make Raise Dead scrolls available for 30k a pop by Vendir (for clerics) or 60k per scroll for non clerics (Dev's figure out the real prices). Then When I kill someone accidently or someone ends up dead that I didn't want dead, I can raise them, say my apologizes and be on my way.
Some people will always be jerks and will kill anyone regardless. However, Not all people who kill indiscriminatly are jerks. For example Axon and the okies are RP factors which are important to emphasize the faction war. I know its upsetting at times, but if an enemy is in you faction and kills you, you just have to deal with it, get better, and exact vengeance at a later time.
Remember, 99 percent of us don't actually PvP and try and actually stop PKer's in most instances. For us 99 percent, we would probably like a method in which to make up for any accidental killings.
One more reason I think RD scrolls should be more widely available quicker combat training, which I have found that most high lvl chars, even though they PK, will give valuable advice for newbs to win future PvP skirmishes.
Hope ya'll like these ideas. Don't remove PK because 1% of people are abusing the rules (and that doesn't include Okies and players like Axon).
Here are some other ideas I posted in other areas which I think are highly relevant to this discussion
--------------------
And so my solution is this, and its very simple.
An interfactional alliance of members, who work together in order to ensure that the lower characters are well kept and helped. Here are my ideas as to what should happen
1: Must have at least a lvl 16 char in order to be effective at helping new chars (with money, items, advice so forth). Why? Being lvl 16 means you have explored a bit, know where the money is, and probably have an ability to give money to others)
2: When you can, help the newbs in your faction by giving them your excess money. After lvl 16 you can't buy items that are that helpful, equipement wise(so far, this is subject to change because of the additions later on in the game), but many chars at high levels have millions of dollars just sitting in their accounts, why not give 1 million gp away if you aren't spending it? (And Yes I donate lots of money to TC)
3: If you want to RP the faction war, thats awesome, go ahead and kill each other, thats cool. Realize that there are two systems out there, some people are trying to play their character as if in the real world, which is perfectly acceptable. Other players just want to have a fun experience without being killed, that is also valid. If you are going to kill other players however, own up to any future consequences that may occur, for example: The Okies never complain, neither does AlexiaGold. They PK players, and they don't whine when they get PKed, that simple.
4: Although people not PKing each other would be nice, it is never going to happen, so work together ACROSS, factions to ensure that you lvl up to a point where you can do something about the PKing mentioned in number 3. If you want to change the world, you first have to have the power to change the world. Thus, lvl with others to get to a high enough lvl.
5: Being nice knows no faction. And this is important to note. If you are being nice to someone, eventually you'll build a reputation of the nice guy, which will help you crusade against PKer's or will help you put an end to the faction wars (through peace)
6: I know its frustrating to die, However, this is a game don't let it get to you. It pisses everyone off when complaints are lodged due to griefing, please just swallow your pride and move on. If you want to solve a problem, solve it, don't complain (I complained, and it got me no where, to which I am sorry and I now realize I was stupid)
7: Most importantly, if you want to form an interfactional guild at some point to uphold the above ideals and suggestions, then DO IT. Make leagues to counter the PKer's. If you aren't a part of the solution, you're a part of an evergrowing problem.
8: Remember, the dev's want us working together. Your faction is simply where you are, the person you play is only a computer figment, however, the way you play your char, will change the way the NS4 world works. If you want NS4 to be a peaceful place, you have to spread the good around to make it peaceful.
9: Quit asking Dev's and DM's to fix the problem for you. nothing is broke, so they won't fix it. If you want the world to be happy and good, then by God, you need to make it happen yourself. Be proactive and do something.
----------------------
I know that its frustrating to die as a newb, however, you're not helpless (not in a mean way), and also You have friends that will help even across factions.
If you want my help I am constantly playing at random times during the day. (mostly at night US mountain time from 10 pm to 1 am ) I have 3 million dollars just sitting on my chars, so please, feel free to ask for my help. My char names are ATI_Radeon Ace of Heart of the HoC, my more prominent character is The Angel Gabriel. Im running around on Server 4 and 3 and generally I give payouts of 100k to 200k at any given time to people who need help. Just ask me and others, I'm sure they will help.

I've tried fire, i've tried faith, and i've tried force, all I have left is hope.
I agree with that. But really, 1 percent shouldn't be ruining the game play of others.ATI wrote:Remember, 99 percent of us don't actually PvP and try and actually stop PKer's in most instances. For us 99 percent, we would probably like a method in which to make up for any accidental killings.
I agree with that. But I've noticed here that fewer players seem to want to tell alot of info to new players. I don't mean, 'go there, get lots of drops' type stuff either. Its more, don't say much or hint. I'm not very good at understanding hints that only impart info if I know what it is the person hinting is hinting about.ATI wrote: And so my solution is this, and its very simple.

Good idea.ATI wrote:2: When you can, help the newbs in your faction by giving them your excess money.
On ns south, I had a 4th level character, I still donated to the donation box those things I couldn't use.
Exactly. Some of us simply don't have alot of spare time to game. PKing someone's character over and over ruins what little free time they have.ATI wrote:3: If you want to RP the faction war, thats awesome, go ahead and kill each other, thats cool. I haven't called for PvP/PK to stop, but I do want such wide level differences of PvP/PK to stop. 20th level and up characters shouldn't be PKing 1-2nd level characters. Its dumb.ATI wrote:4: Although people not PKing each other would be nice, it is never going to happen, so work together ACROSS, factions to ensure that you lvl up to a point where you can do something about the PKing mentioned in number 3.
I really don't think its pride at being griefed.ATI wrote:6: I know its frustrating to die, However, this is a game don't let it get to you. I don't have the time to spare to spend my online time being someone else's punching bag. Thats how Isee PKing. Some may claim I'm whining, but I see it as me complaining about someone I see as doing wrong to a beginning character, probably a begining player as well.
A noble goal, but I don't think it will happen. Too many people in online gaming get too many kicks out of making others miserable. Some online games allow it, and some stomp on the griefers, the rest are somewhere inbetween.ATI wrote:8: Remember, the dev's want us working together. I've been checking into other online games, all due to this.
Some only allow PKing/PvP under certain circumstances, and both have to agree. I like that, both have to agree to it. I doubt if 'both have to agree' will be implemented here. It would be nice to have though.

To make up for accidental killing i'd make a 5th lvl cleric and scribe raise dead scrolls(pretty certain they get raise at 5th). Apparently they only cost about 510xp for a bundle of ten, and this way you can slaughter anything in sight to be safe, and later pick up the pieces at little expense, especially since you can have that cleric xp relatively safely with summons, spells, fighter equip, and higher lvl pots and scrolls and items from your main.

I like this. Make the faction areas "no holds barred" so you can make an assault, but beef up the defenses so that guards aren't easily slaughtered. Everywhere else - either the target agrees to the fight, or you back off.bongoblue wrote:Some only allow PKing/PvP under certain circumstances, and both have to agree. Or, like I suggested before, make a 'Free Faction' for people who don't want to deal with the pking. Free Faction are off-limits, and Free Faction can't PK. Both 'sides' are satisfied. The factional types can kill each other with wild abandon in their own little version of the Blood War, while those of us who just love the world and think Neversummer is the very best multiplay mod ever made for NWN can go about our business without being molested.
And I'd like to point out that it can't be a percentage as tiny as 1%. I've been PK'ed four times in less than two weeks; if it were truly this small a percentage, I probably wouldn't have met a pk'er yet, much less four of them.

It's 9th (fifth level spell). And it's 54 XP each (540 for 10).AndrewCarr wrote:To make up for accidental killing i'd make a 5th lvl cleric and scribe raise dead scrolls(pretty certain they get raise at 5th).
