Afaik Okies were called all the people who lost all their means of living during the depression in the late 20s and early 30s and migrated to California. The Calis called them Okies, because the majority came from there...

"Grapes of Wrath" is the right book to read (or movie for the lazy or busy to watch) written by John Steinbeck.


EDIT: actually I stand corrected it was first used as a name for a resident of Oklahoma in 1907, only years later in 1930 it was misused as a pejorative for the immigrants from Oklahoma and nearby states by Californians.
