Does this happen regulary or just for me? non of the other Genars (playing from this house or elsewhere) have this issue. It does usually seem to resolve itself after a server reboot, but still hella annoying when ya want to play. Is there a workaround around this?

it happens more than it should, i think its a nw process locking up. nothing but restart solves i believe.

The digital packages have shared cd keys, you need to ask the vendor for a unique one.

If you are booted or close the nwn process by task killing, the server sometimes won't free your cdkey.

Changing your client port may or may not work (nwnplayer.ini), as what we block is the same ip:port combination because it explodes the server.

I have ant online key from GOG, so it isn't that. I did try changing the port and it seemed to work once but never again, so I suspect that one time was a fluke.

I have a handful of keys that I use, the only issue I have similar to this (that I have fixed with batch files) is if I switch keys then I cannot connect to NS4 at all for a while unless I also change the client port #.

What I have done is made a series of 'nwncdkey.ini' and 'nwnplayer.ini' files and a batch file for each account I use to automatically cycle the key, account name and port - since I have had it setup like this it's worked fine.

The cdkey in use error has happened to me in the past, usually if I have a nwmain crash and my toon is actually still standing around in the server, with the cd key locked - normally logging back into the server after relaunching nwmain will fix this, but very occasionally not.

Try a quick search of the forum, for 'GoG key', you will find some more info. If I remember, you have to ask them for a unique key if you have this problem.

I have all my keys entered into my nwncdkey.ini. I then open the nwncdkey.ini inside a specific sandbox and uncomment the keys. Then I can just right click Open in sandbox, and choose what sandbox to open with.

This allows me to change screen resolutions and have it set for each nwn I run and never revert (unless i dump the sandbox)... as well as a few other tweaks for running 3 at once.

I've had numerous issues with the cd key in use, to the point I almost think my key is being used by someone else. I've searched high and low for a fix to no avail. There were a few posts here where some were able to work around the issue: batch this, sandbox that, change port etc. which I have very limited knowledge of. I understand the concept but that is about it.

Couple details:

I own the hard copy (NWN Gold and HoU) of the game originally purchased upon it's release at Best-Buy (I believe) and im using the keys printed in the manual.

It's happened numerous times and im to the point of giving up on the game all-together. Just yesterday I logged off about 11:30am (EST) and attempted to log back in about 5 hours later (key in use) so I checked in over the next 4 hours and finally got in (a total of around 8-9 hours after logging out.) I couldn't find a party so I was only on for maybe 20min. I tried this morning to log (key in use) which is somewhere around 9 hours since I logged out previously.... What im getting at - if the server did not release my key when I logged out why didn't it release my key after numerous server resets? Is it something on my end? Could someone else be using my key? I was able to log onto other servers without any issues if that means anything....

Anyhow, If anyone could help I would very much appreciate it.

Your CDKeys have only been used for the creation of your toons - I don't think anyone else is using the same CDkey on you from that.

I'll direct Lokey to this post when he logs on - see if he has past experiences which can help us solve your problem.

...after not being able to log all day today I somehow managed to get in around 3:30 and stayed on for about an hour or so. I logged out normally and all appeared well. Just tried to log back in after about an hour away and voila key in use... I'm not complaining again, im just trying to give some details to help make sense of this mess.

Give us the name of an account you use (spelling counts) so we can sniff for issues. (ETA: we tried Tazz and got stuff, yay.)

Additionally, are you on a shared ip address range? Say a college dorm or something like that. Well, with an account we can grab the log of that and have cely find out too

Also try to eliminate any OS sources of issues: I'm not up on latter-day win and the headaches involved there #1 piece of advice is don't use the loader app, use nwmain.whatver

ETA: there's definitely weird behavior, not sure what's going on yet.

I'm not sure if something was done on the server side or what the deal is but the issue was a distant memory until today. It was about 5 hours since I logged out and I just tried to log and "in use." Im not sure I can go through this endless fiasco again...

I've been wondering, with the authentication server down, how does the ns4 server check for cdkey legitimacy? Does the ns4 server have a comprehensive list of all public keys issued by Bioware? What is the server-side mechanism that invalidates a pirated key (such as from a key generator) if it doesn't have the authentication server to check against? This is important if, say, I want to buy another set of cdkeys but it may or may not work depending on how ns4 checks these things without consulting the now-defunct authentication server.

NS4 has a homegrown character security mechanism which, when enabled, will only allow a player to log in with a particular character if the current cdkeys match the cdkeys used to create that character. So if you buy a new set of cdkeys, you will need to ask Mining or Lokey to update the character database to use the new cdkeys instead of the old cdkeys. Otherwise, you will find yourself locked out.

I don't think he's referring to existing characters and keys... Basically he's asking if a keygen that generates a non-purchased key will still authenticate to NS4. For example, could you just type 1234-1234-1234-1234-1234 into your .ini and have it work with regards to NS4. New character & account, nothing existing to check against. As long as the NWN game accepts the key as a valid key to play, I don't think NS4 has any custom key authentication as far as the legitimacy of a key.
