Looking to Pass on the Torch
Looking to Pass on the Torch
Hello everyone...
As you folks know, I'm a big fan of NS4... I was a player for a few years, then joined the staff over three years ago. I've poured countless hours of blood, sweat, and tears into this game, and its for this reason that I'd like to find a replacement as I begin the process of stepping down as lead dev.
I simply can't dedicate the amount of time I'd like to anymore, and I'd like to see new, fresh content be delivered to NS4. So I'm looking for a new NS4 dev who has the skills, time, and cooperation to do this. An NS4 dev should have decent programming and database experience. Someone who's always thinking about exploits as they're designing a new feature is key... since you guys are all cheaters! ....Additionally, there might be a large learning curve, so be prepared to spend a lot of time just ramping up and getting used to the tools and scripts. We need a dev who isn't going to go missing in the near future, but is dedicated to NS4, and is in regular discussion with the staff through the forums and IRC. Finally, we need a dev who's a team player... its one thing to get a bad DM on the team (we've had a few over the years), but its quite another to get devs who consistently goes against the will of the admins, DMs, and other devs and makes lots of unappreciated changes. I've had ideas shot down by the rest of the staff, and that's just the way it works.... in other words, we don't need cowboy developers.
I've been looking through the change log from the past three years and reminiscing of fun updates, big fixes, and huge mistakes... it's been fun.

Re: Looking to Pass on the Torch
We took a vote and have decided that we dont want you to pass the torch. We discussed it further and have devised a fool proof plan: You really only need 2 hours of sleep a night to survive. We feel that with this extra time that we just saved for you, you will be able to continue as the lead dev. Thank you for your suggestion about a possible torch pass, but it doesnt fit into our schedules at this time.

Cursed nice weather and loose morals in <place where Bril lives>.
I guess we can make a list of the particular things ns4 needs (which kludges are creaking the most, what might be doable now that didn't used to be, etc...) There's also a lot of things available from nwnx now that wasn't when whichever major system was put together, but require testing and profiling to decide what to do with--i.e. the mighty hide button can now be n-worded and so forth.

Don't you dare nerf my mighty HiPS button.
I have always imagined that when shamed prepares for relic events, he grabs his bull horn, he finds his Napoleon hat, and he settles in for a weekend of barking orders and generally pissing off everyone in the tc/nc coalition. - Burrahobbit

Lets hope it goes smoother than this.

What kind of time commitment is this? 3 hrs/week? 5, 10, 20?

Re: Looking to Pass on the Torch
To all the Dev's that have contributed to this mod.
I spend a lot of time talking to players new to NS4. Ofcourse I give them the forum and wiki location information. But I find that the sheer size of the information there can be duanting, and thus I like to give them an overview and answer any questions they have. Of all the players Ive spoken with, they all have something in common. They are amazed at the depth and variety of the NS4 mod. I thought you should know.

Re: Looking to Pass on the Torch
Variable, probably not the best way to think of it. We've had devs that spend more hours per week for work/school than is healthy still find time to do decent stuff.Daral0085 wrote:What kind of time commitment is this? 3 hrs/week? 5, 10, 20?
There's a lot more to say on the subject that I can't think of a way to rattle off here concisely right now.
