Nightmares in Abyss

Post by LinuxPup »

One thing I've tried that's mostly reduced the horse lag issue is add "Max Memory Usage=64" under the "[Game Options]" section. Apparently by default NWN caches 16 megs of a certain type of data, which includes horse animation data. If you set it to 64, which is the maximum amount, it can help a lot. Note, you'll still get an initial lag spike as it loads the data from your hard drive, but the next time you see a horse it will hopefully be cached so you don't have to reload the data (causing the nasty freeze-up). Here's the first part of my nwnplayer.ini (located in the NWN folder):

Code: Select all

[Game Options]
Max Memory Usage=64
Memory Level=1
Memory Access=1
TooltipDelay uSec=100000
Enable FloatyTextFeedback=1
Hide SecondStoryTiles=0
Single Player ItemLevelRestrictions=0
Single Player Enforce Legal Characters=0
Client CPU Affinity=0
ClientEntireChatWindowLogging=0
LogMyEmoteUsage=0
In-game Text Swear Filter=0
Visible Cloaks=1
MouseoverFeedback=1
TextBubbleMode=1
Heartbeat Logging=0
Some people report good progress... its helped me somewhat.

I had at 64, seems better at 128. It's not anything else in the area, it's fine without the mounted beasties.

If its still really bad we can always remove the Nightmares... would be a shame since they look so cool, but the freeze-ups can be really annoying. Damn Bioware :evil:

The nightmares do look incredibly awesome. Nasty too. I was fighting one that had escaped the abyss,... I thought I was doing pretty good too. Course, I hadn't actually landed a blow that did any damage. Then... BLAM!! When he turned toward me and I took a nice firey hoof right to the face!! One shot kill.

But did I get discouraged?? Heck NO!! I rested. Rebuffed. Drank a couple of Pots and went RIght back at him! And I was doing VERY well. (Course, I still hadn't done any damage.) Then... BLAM!! He turned toward me again and I took another firey hoof right to the face!! One shot kill... Again. As the hoof was coming down though, I just had time to notice that on the bottom of its hoof there was a tattoo of a fist with a raised middle finger.

I guess the thing to brag about here... "Yeah. I fought a Nightmare Steed. TWiCe! And he could only land two hits on me!"

(serves me right trying to build Aasimar spotters) hehe

Can't wait to see the rest looks fun. Nice work.

Definitly one of the coolest looking monsters in game (almost as cool as our little friend who hangs out with the dead ;)) and an excellent foe!
Had alot of fun with our 6pack fighting the guys down and watching it smite the Torm out of my party mates. Can't wait to see what the Abyss is like with the new config. Hopefully will reduce my lag issues with the newer tilesets aswell.

maybe its my imagination but going to 128 on that memory line seems to have cleared up my spontaneous full system reboots while playing nwn problem.

is it possible to get around the horse time stop effect by putting a horse mob near the entrance to the zones where they pop? i.e. level design in a cache preload effectively.

ugly perhaps, but also cool if you get to keep nightmares!

It's supposed to help the second time they appear.
