I would just like to point out that Obsidian Entertainment is the company that developed NWN2 and MoTB. I believe the only involvement Bioware had was perhaps providing some advice and technical support to the Obsidian Developers.
Thanks, got past the bug though. Had to travel alone so the game wouldn't crash, then had to go back and get some companions. Got pretty far after that, but then again, it crashed again just now after I defeated the King of Shadow's Avatar. Seriously, right after I defeated the boss, it crashed.
I beat it, finally. Living in constant fear of crashing was a pain, but I read around a bit and found out it was due to an overheating problem. From what I can tell, my computer doesn't overheat much, this is the first time I've had this problem. But from the looks of it, it doesn't take much for the game to crash during transition. Personally, I prefer the simpler transitions in NWN 1, the transitions in NWN 2 are way too burdensome on your computer.
Either way, onto the game. Besides the bugs, the game was actually enjoyable. The bugs were extremely frustrating, but if you end up playing, hopefully they'll be fixed by then. As I said, awesome storyline. I don't really plan on playing the Multiplayer though, I prefer NS 4 Balance. The Devs are going to have a hell of a time balancing out NWN 2, its so overly uber it is ridiculous.
For instance, take Greater Resistance gives +6 to All Saves for 24 Hours. This effectively makes going Paladin useless, as with those saves, who needs Paladin saves? Then theres the aforementioned problem of True Seeing. This means that Online Gameplay is going to be mostly restricted to spells like IGMs and such, same like non-NS4 NWN 1. Only difference is you're going to make your computer cry more with all the insane stuff NWN 2 has tried to cram into one game.
And the spoilers. The end made me a bit sad, but I've been playing so long to finish, it was worth it. In the end, Sand and Neeshka betrayed me. I don't know how Neeshka did, because when I first met her it said Influence: Success. But then she joined up with Garius again, so who knows.
Sand leaving me was the best thing I could ask for. Never used him past the Trial, always preferred Qara. Since he joined Garius, Qara was more than happy to stay with me and kill him. Qara ended up being the last survivor, the Construct having destroyed all 5 statues while the others distracted the King. After the statues were destroyed, only Khelgar was standing. Khelgar finally fell, then the Construct took his place. Before the Construct fell, Qara managed to hit the King with about 5 Greater IGMs. Once the Construct fell, the King was at half death and I was left with an injured sorcerer standing. I had to quickly use the Lesser IGMs on her staff to bring down the King. In the end, all I had left standing was a Near Death Sorcerer and about 7 dead companions plus me.
I have to admit that while the game has a few problems (area load times are a big one) I really enjoyed it. Have played through OC 4 times, and several Modules trying out builds, and the diversity of characters is astounding. Can't wait for NS5, but have to agree that balancing for pvp is going to be tough going. I forsee a lot of cries of "OMG they nerfed this, that, and the other thing" in the future. I for one am happy with most of the changes made in NS4 for balance's sake and hope the Devs do as good a job on NS5. Just please don't make everything slashing resistant, as I REALLY like swords.
Choose your death carefully. You'll be stuck with it for a very long time.
yeah bioware handed off the code to obsidian, who then ran with it to make nwn2. they did the same for knights of the old republic -> kotor2.
and pretty much the same result: massively unfinished low quality code, lots of crashes, decent voice acting, and did i say massively unfinished and low quality code? and ooh... more eye candy.
they also WRECKED the multiplayer custom server concept... to the point where you need third party software to keep all the files in sync between you and the server.
There's been missteps. There are several large glaring problems (I'm looking at you ActivatePortal()) with multiplayer, and those sting.
However Obsidian has given us a not small number of things that we would never see from Bio (i.e. the toolset API which is pretty big). Their dev presence is much better as well as their willingness to acknowledge the above problems. I can think of a few things Obsid was notified of and they fixed while Bio still claims it's not a problem or impossible to change...

Beat Mask of the Betrayer. Was much, much shorter than the first. I welcome this change as the first was...exhaustingly long. Either way, MotB spoilers if you couldn't see it coming.
I didn't import my original character (Shadowdancer/Rogue/Neverwinter Nine) from the original, which was a good thing as he wasn't all that great. So instead I rerolled something similar, a Rogue/Barbarian/Invisible Blade.
This combination worked...ridiculously well. I didn't die until the very end, to be absolutely honest. I ended up with 10 attacks per round, not including haste. I dual wielded kukris for good Crit Range, although nearly everything was crit immune so that was little help. Not like it mattered, for Safiya is godly. She can upgrade your weapons to NS3.5 calibur, I ended up having Fire, Ice, Acid, and Electrical Damage between the two of my kukris. In no small amounts either, the smallest was Electrical at 2d4 and Ice the largest at 4d6.
Gold was in the millions, not like I bought anything anyhow. The drops are, coincidently, also ridiculous. I got a robe fit for a Rogue as soon as Okku's Barrow. Safiya made my own kukris, and everything else just dropped. It got to the point where I had a hard time deciding which overpowered item I should use over the other.
Either way, I still liked the storyline. It saddened me to lose all my previous allies, but I eventually located Ammon Jerro who basically told me everyone died except for him, Khelgar Ironfist, and possibly the Githzerai - who disappeared. I got him to adventure with me for a brief time, but only as minor companion who I could not control nor interact with much.
I traveled with Safiya, Okku, and Gann mainly, although I used Kaelyn in Shadow Mulsantir. Successfully influenced all of them to fight with me in the end, and got my influence with Safiya to 100. This allowed her to fight in the final boss battle with me.
Since I breezed through the entire game, the boss battle was the only thing of difficulty. Like everything else, I did about 100 damage per round to the boss, however, this wouldn't kill him. The End Boss scripts would save him as he spawned one of three mini-bosses consecutively, until all three were killed. It took 4 attempts to kill him, as although my damage was...ungodly, it counted for little as his mini-bosses kept him alive each time. Safiya provided backup with Max IGMs, but as for a tank, I was without one.
Either way, the epilogue makes me eager for the expected 3rd Campaign. The epilogue pointed out a regroup with Khelgar, and that Gann stayed with me, but I'm not sure if those two will carry over to the 3rd, but I hope so.
we may get there some day. i'm playing the campaign multiplayer co-op with 3 friends (like we did for nwn1).
we were totally stoked when the game came out, but data losing crashes every 5 minutes made us put it back on the shelf until they patched it.
6 months later, 1.06 and the game crashes only once per night for one of us, but we still lose data (from 'saved' games!!!??). random inventory glitches. randomly someone will log and will have no items. or will be missing certain items. or xp AND items. we can't upgrade to 1.10, because they introduced a new safedisc copy protection that now wont recognize my cdrom. so i cant upgrade, and i'm hosting the game.
exporting your character is a crapshoot. every few minutes i save in 4 slots, and at the end of each night everyone exports their character before logging off. we STILL lose data, and it's not always in the exported character. if the server crashes, it can corrupt data in multiple save slots (quick save and your most recent regular save slot).
the game will randomly strip off all your buffs when transitioning between city zones.
we are just barely having enough fun to keep going, but its a drag to do quad saves, exports, and "ok everybody out dude #3 crashed and we dont know what that will do to everyone else."
we never had these problems with nwn1, but by the time we started playing that the third expansion was out. for some reason i expected... playable multiplayer.
we can't upgrade to 1.10, because they introduced a new safedisc copy protection that now wont recognize my cdrom. so i cant upgrade, and i'm hosting the game.
I'd say that's your main problem. Work on that and I'd bet a lot of the other bits will take care of themselves...
Is this a legit copy? I've never even heard of a patch preventing recognizing a CDROM in NWN2.
Flailer NS Developer None of us is as dumb as all of us.
bah.. i gave up on nwn2.. still too buggy to play, it crashes so many times in a single hour and somehow i lost all my more recent save games (possibly lost in the transition to my new computer setup)
On the other hand, the nwn2 toolset works perfectly fine ;].
Good cthuloids... am I the only person that NEVER encountered a bug while playing NWN2?
Though wait... ugh... maybe that one time when I couldn't finish one quest because some halfling didn't want my adamantine or something.
