lost faction - high priest.
When a caster (and specially wiz/sorcer) fights against hiden character (s), one good option is to use area spells.
Such spells could be friendly or not. In the second case, NPC defenders become hostile and you lost your faction.
When you are killed, you respawned in temple, not far from the area to be defended ... and you can come back to the fight. When you lost yout faction, you lost it till next reboot. (Using a restore pot did not work last night on my toon. Is it a general rule ?, i don't know).Of course, a solution is to not use those spells, or to defend, hostile, which is not so easy for casters. So....well .... if it could be another solution.
I think it is difficult to script a way for NPC defenders not being hostile. You can say, too, that it is normal than you become hostile for a while. But, i think, not till next reboot.
For more, you can have lvl drained in relic war or when coming back from a run.
So, what about introduce a high priest, who can heal, restore and give back your faction ? Or, at least, both of these cases, or just solve the faction problem ?

Re: lost faction - high priest.
In my experience, if you accidentally hit a defender (with an AOE, accidental kd/disarm, because NWN likes to switch targets when you hit the disarm/kd button), you will become red to npcs on that map. This is also the same if you attack one of your own guys in front of friendly npcs. In this case if you leave the map you should be fine (even if you accidentally kill one, maybe two). However, if you cast something that doesn't go away right away (some aoes can last a few minutes), it may continue to damage friendlies and if it kills too many (which is something like 3), you'll permanently lose faction. As easy as it is to accidentally kill defenders, it seems the number of kills before you lose faction is too low.
Anyway, once you lose faction permanently, you will be red in your town and red to everyone, including players of your own faction. The big problem with this is you are most likely bound in your home city and will continuously die as you respawn. A server reset will not clear your faction in my experience and only a DM can fix it.
I still have a toon that is KOS outside Ave. I have no clue how he lost faction with Ave as I never attacked the guards. I was bound there and just ran out one day and they were attacking me. I haven't been able to get this resolved as the first DM did not have the tools to fix it and I haven't been able to reach another DM since. However, during the relic event when one of my toons lost faction in our home city a DM did fix it very quickly. I guess you just have to try to catch them when they're not busy as there is a lot going on on the server.
If there were some way to fix faction that would be great though. Something along the lines of "kill 100 orcs and you'll get your faction back." However I see a possible exploit with this if say someone from another faction tries this out and is suddenly not KOS in your town.
It seems to be a big problem with the pvp model with no good solution.

Considering that the caster is throwing down an area attack and that they know that their own compatriots (faction npcs) are in the area attempting to defend at the same time, it seems only logical that if said spell harms them that the caster becomes a renegade to the faction. If its too simple to recover faction, spellcasters would hellball and other area affect in their relic room with impunity, knowing they could quest it away or pay a fine they likely have a load of money to cover. Not all builds are meant to be able to counter all other builds, if you can't see a sd in your relic room and can't risk an area attack to counter them, its time to build a spotter or another type that can take care of them. I think the current system is fine the way it is. If you perm lose your faction, a nice DM quest could make for an exciting and unique way to regain favour.

lol, with those guys if you kill monks at the monistary that will make you KOS for ave mercs.ashsagoon wrote:I still have a toon that is KOS outside Ave. I have no clue how he lost faction with Ave as I never attacked the guards. What monks at what monestary?
And what about accidentally hitting one of the defenders (like melee, not an AOE that you know can hit them). IMO NWN has a super buggy and fruity targeting system. I can have a mob targeted, but as soon as i hit knockdown it targets something else and it's incredibly hard to target the mob with the knockdown cursor. It almost seems to want to target friendlies. This isn't the devs fault this is built into the game and it can't be changed but even as careful as I am I've hit plenty of defenders and some of those guys go down in very few hits. When everyone is swarmed around something it's very hard to tell what you're hitting also. Accidents happen and if you kill 2 of those that's it. After you hit the first one once they all turn red which makes it even easier to hit more.
Personally I think capturing relics should give you faction. Maybe if you go KOS then if you capture 2 or 3 relics you get it back, and you can build a small buffer against it. Isn't capping relics the ultimate way of showing your loyalty?

the faction system is set up so that it takes more than just a single act to lose your faction permanently. kd's, aoe spells, fire and run tactics...those make them hostile for a bit.....when you start killing them is when they go all out hostile.
it was listed in the boards before...you actually have to do more than a single act to lose faction standing.

You can also look at as if your faction are a bunch of ungrateful creetons. If they go hostile to you wage war on them until they succumb to your will. If they still refuse to drop the hostility then continue with the butchering until they do.
I use to go on quests to regain my faction, but then I realized if they turned hostile to me then they deserved the same fate as my enemies. But then again MA respects power and power alone. So this tactic may not suit well for other factions.

Power is not given. It is taken.

LOL i liked that too... maybe in order to regain faction SL And MA should be able to clear their city proper of all inhabitants, thus forcing the faction to recognize the PC's supremacy, and thus regaining their faction

Re: lost faction - high priest.
I'm just astonished. Melanie never attacks any defenders (NPC or PC) in ns, never do area spells except grease, just to avoid to touch her party. That time, i use greater thunderclap cause i was alone (except NPC) against several attackers. Anyone knows that this spell stun but is not enough to kill. So, my experience is: 1 spell without kill = lost faction.Amoenotep wrote:

Re: lost faction - high priest.
you lose pts based on certain acts...sure they don't seem like much at the time, but they build up until that single act makes you lose standing.
i think i tested one time that i could actually kill 6 guards before i lost faction standing....kill then run, find/kill then run...i got quite a few before it told me i lost faction so...the pts are there.

Best would be those points appear to the player and rules about them be clear. For now, it looks like a dark box. Player would best understand what happen and probably more respectfull. It is always easier to respect law you know than those you don't know !
In any case, a definitely banishment of faction looks out of range for actions in fire of fight.
(By the way, a single area spell could hurt more than 6 guards, and i kill none, at my knowledge)
