We know holding a wipe over your heads is a bad idea.

The problem is you've got a good dev team again ;) People with the know-how and time to clean up some long-standing issues, do things better based off a different hosting situation and fill in some "we'll come back and do something better later" issues. Some of these are back-end, that'll make things run more smoothly and mean less headaches in the long run. Oh, and changes due to recent patches and the often beta'd 1.69.

A clean wipe is easiest by far. That's 5 minutes, move the vault and a few TRUNCATE commands to the database. Keeping info for doing anything would be time-consuming. Several hours of work plus a lot of testing...time that could be spent on other things.

Prime has about 20k player characters weighing in at about 1.2GB. There's a lot of database on that (probably a few hundred columns per player), but that's why we use MySQL in the first place: it can handle lots of data and spit out what you want quickly. That's not a reason to wipe on it's own.

In general we take player feelings into account when doing things, but we've done wildly unpopular things before too (nerf those clerics into the Stone Age ;)).

then why not wipe the server !

or better yet --- maybe the Gods of Atheria have become so discusted with the way Atherians are treating eachother that they decided to slaughter all of them in hopes that the next generation will be more peaceful and prosperous :P

But...Tyr wants us to strike down the unjust...right? :(

We've got gods that want to fight for greed and power and gods that (while few and far between) want to fight against greed and power. There's not one of them that's ever said "Hey, paladins and assassins, druids and wizards, elves and dwarves...let's all just get along!"

Thereby, Fatz, I judge your previous post a moo point.

You know.
A moo point.
It's like a cow's opinion.
It doesn't matter.
It's "Moo".

may the bovine god smite your precious Tyr !!1! mmm hamburgers !

aye true... peace is boring .... i think my mind was tainted from yesterdays idealist theme when i wrote that last comment

i think more excitement will come of this topic when 1.69 hits --- one final hurrah (wipe) for NS4 and then let it become a massive melting pot like the ns3.5 servers --- that sounds like an awesome idea to me

I don't have an opinion on whether there should be a wipe. However ...

If a wipe is coming, and if we can know ahead of time, how about a pre-wipe last hurrah in the Thunderdome? Start out with lowbies, winner keeps playing til "eliminated" ( ), last man standing gets bragging rights. Should make for a good day's entertainment.

Or take it a step further and make a big deal about it and award a bunch of awards/titles to a bunch of people for different things like best of Faction, best of Guild, warfare in brackets based on level and class. You could go nuts turning it into something really cool, like a week-long event which could earn players items, xp, or more... in the upcoming realm. hmmm...

Thinking more about it, it could require more than 1 thunderdome if there is enough interest.

Perhaps just rid of all the level 40s. And the characters unused for the last 2 years. No need to visit the sins of the fathers on the sons. :D

aye i like that !

the last few standing could recieve a special title -- or armor dye or whatnot ....that could be used on their characters when the 'new' population arises !

I'm just wondering if there is a way the devs can make it so if u dont use either a player or account in an amount of time " just say 8 - 10 months, or even a bit longer" have them deleted automatically somehow. So if u plan on not playing in a long time, just log in once in a while to keep these chars. This is only a suggestion and an idea like any other, maybe someone can turn this into somehting useful so there wont be anymore wipes.

I know Diablo II did that. It forced a lot of players to stop playing. Myself included. It is one thing to have a wipe and have everyone start off from scratch, but to have someone take a break for an extended period of time then come back to just have his or her toons all wiped would be the death blow for many players. On the other hand, if it could be implemented so there is a lengthy time frame before it happened, as you mention, then it may not be so bad. Or even if toons/accounts were to go into a temp storage kind of stasis after a period of time, but not deleted and lost. Maybe a separate database so as not to clog the main one? Since 1.69 is suppose to be the "last" patch then perhaps it does warrant a wipe, and future possibilities may be considered for future purposes. Not being one of the Devs I cannot say as to how much a wipe could benefit the installation of the new patch and such, but it sounds as if it would be a great help and would only benefit the entire server in the long run.

i for one dont want a wipe as its taken me ages to get my 2 lvl 40s and i still like playing them and most of my other high lvl builds I have had for a wile and I still play them form time to time I think its safe to say a wipe would kill a lot of the fun I have on this server especially as I dont have the ability to get to 40 in 5 minits like some people seem to so im not in faver of a wipe

Keep in mind, though: the reason it takes some people such a short time to reach 40 is because of the ARMY of 40's that they have, which they farm gear with so that they basically "go shopping" for their next toon's gear.

I don't have a 40 at all and I've been around for a while, I also don't have the days on end to dedicate like some, so I know what you mean. Still, if you think about it, everyone would be starting out the same as you - level 1 with nothing but the rags on your back.
