Custom Avatars?

Post by Knightwing4 »

Hey guys, just wondering why the devs decided to make custom avatars so smalll

Image
for example is 100x89 pixels, and it's to big cuz it's not 29 pixels off...

anyways my point is why not enlarge it so the maximum is the size of at least the portraits that the website hosts, besides, the image isn't hosted by NS would a small increase to say 120x100 really be a big deal?

EDIT: if you're working on NS to get it up for an easter present, go on your merry way :P

Yes, that is definitely a change from the NS3 board's 130 x 160.

I don't know the reason for the change, but I'm sure its a good one.

When I was dialin-up, the boards were slow, slow, slow to load because of the pics.

80 x 80 isn't so bad, many forums use 60x60.

If it's just to be kind to the dial-uppers, how about setting the default setting to "Don't show avatars"? I used it when it was popular to use wallpapers as avatars, that way I didn't have to set my screen resolution to 4000*3000 as soon as someone did it...

It might make sense to also put a restriction on the use of graphics in sigs. There are some extremely large ones out there. Also, the animated sigs and avatars use a lot of bandwidth - be nice if we could turn them off.

Either by not accepting .gif's or .png's at all, or maybe reading the file for being multi-frame. Don't know enough php to know if it's got a function for that or if you'd have to write your own though

The width limit of 80 is to keep avatars from screwing up the thread layouts (pushing them to the side, etc). Since most people have "portrait"-style avatars, I've upped this to 120x80. That should be good.

Well if there isnt a limit on sig sizes Hopefully lord_modred's is the largest that we will see. Some people get so carried away making this HUGE sig that it makes you think they are compensating for something :P
