There was a time when the server crashed every time someone died while polymorphed. It was such a frequent occurrence that the server population was in constant preparation for it to crash spontaneously. People tried to shout when they thought they were likely to die while shifted, and that was nice, but 3 out of 5 times it went down without notice.

Dividing up loot was always a precarious situation. Knowing that at any given moment the server could crash and lose it all. We (the player population) became adept at rolling and picking our loot quickly for just this very reason. We've all gotten spoiled with the server being rather stable these days. Having said that, it would be nice if the DMs could compensate for such inevitabilities once in awhile, as they did back in the day. I know that replacing equipment due to a server crash is not a DM's prerogative, nor has it ever been, but I do know that gods have on occasions restored balance by providing bounty for another successful adventure.
