Subrace SR Increase

Post by LinuxPup »

Perhaps increase the SR from 5 + character level to 10 + character level once the character reaches level 35. This will allow it to scale better with some of the planar creatures, while not being too uber at lower levels.

If you want increased SR, take Githzerai.

Githzerai are the same as the other subraces with SR (Drow, Githyanki, and Deep Gnome). I'm only talking about races that come with SR of course.

So...is the point to make them untouchable by spells?

45 + item bonus is pretty high at lvl 40 (I think).
Throw in the Spell Resistance spell and you're really not going to get hit by anything but focused casters anyway.

Am I missing something?

Yes you are....

First, SR doesn't stack.

Second, 45 SR isn't so great in epic areas or against other epic casters. It has a 0% chance of protecting you against a level 40 caster with epic spell penetration... unless there's an auto-success in the roll (I can't tell since you can't see the roll) in which case your chance is only 5%.

And in general, you can assume a level 40 mage is going to have some spell penetration. If a level 40 Drow had 50 SR at level 40 he'd at least have 15% chance of resisting a spell... which is something! :) Of course the mage would probably Mord'em and then his chance will be 0% again... still 50 SR would be nice.

And I'm only proposing an increase in higher levels... when your fighting higher level casters anyway...

none of those bonuses stack. It only takes in to account the higher of the three.

But, that's kind of the point of taking epic spell penetration, right?

Also, fallout21, my apologies. I'd forgotten that the spell doesn't stack with the ability.

Helm of the Grand Mystic says that it grants +14 to spell resistance, though. Does that stack or not?

No spell resist stacks with any other kind of spell resist, Whichever is the highest one is the only one that counts.

Well yeah, Spell Penetration is supposed to help (and does)... but I think there should be a chance a level 40 character should be able to resist a level 40 spell however... at least 15% or so...

Something I was thinking about...

It seems like there should be an even balance between a caster and SR. Monks and the Spell Resistance spell are level + 10 and level +12 respectively because it makes it close to a 50/50 toss up between a caster (with no spell pen. feats) and the target.

I suggest making the SR for ECL 3 subraces: Level + 11 (which I believe is the standard SR for a Drow).

This would mean that a level 30 Drow character would have a 50% chance of resisting a spell from a pure level 30 wizard. However, this would drop down to only 20% if the wizard took epic spell penetration. And, the wizard deserves the 80% success rate because he's spent feats on improving his spell penetration, while the Drow has not spent feats on improving his SR (and yes, I've had thoughts about that too).

This would also encourage more pure (or almost pure) casters while at the same time keeping them from being too uber. Currently there's no chance to resist spells from even a mage 7 levels lower if the mage has epic spell pen. Seems like a level 40 Drow should be able to resist a level 33 caster's spell at least some of the time.

This would not be overpowering because mages have Mord which kills any chance of resisting anyway, and the casters that don't have Mord. (bards, clerics, etc.) have other ways of dealing out damage besides spells.

And finally, it would make the SR more worthwhile... it currently seems like it only kicks in when I'm in areas where the monsters are so low level that they don't give much xp anyway. I only feel cool when I take my level 33 Githyanki to Ice Giants or those ogre mages on mountain trail... the SR does very little in planar areas.

Currently the only races that have SR are ECL 3 and most people won't play them because of that. Giving them a small bonus in the SR department would make these races more playable.

It seems that a lot of players also like to multi class the casters they play. Giving the ECL 3 races a little SR boost would give people a little more incentive to make pure casters to be able to effect those 40th level characters.

I second that, SR 5+Level has novelty value only when you consider the availbility of feats to counter it.

SR of 5+lvl just does not cut it for an ECL 3 class.

The specifics have all already been stated above, changing it to 11+lvl at around lvl 30 or 35 gets my vote.
This will not be over quickly.

You will not enjoy this.

Perhaps grading the SR advance some to give you +1 more every 5-8 levels. This would give you a total of +11 around 30th or 40th.

One other thing... it can be changed so that SR comes back after you get raised/resurrected? Also, stealing a relic removes all SR... seems pretty odd.
