Trap Components

With the current trap-crafting system, as your Craft Trap skill increases you can make more traps. A character must be level 8 (or level 5 with Skill Focus(Craft Trap)) before being able to make all the minor traps.

Unfortunately, trap components are extremely rare, so rare that a character without skill focus will never find a usable trap component they can use until level 4, and then only if extremely lucky.

Can trap components be made much more common in drops, especially from low-cr monsters? Could some merchants be made/changed to sell trap components or traps themselves?

It gets even worse as you go up in levels. It seems that higher level traps take more components and it actually becomes more difficult to set the traps you can make as well. Since they rely on different stats you usually you end up with traps in your inventory that you can't set at all.

I typically collect trap components and hang on to them until I run into the one trap-crafter I know of on the server, then give them to her. Trap-setting is different and needs encouraging :)

Reviving this thread.

Are people currently seeing crafting components (skeleton knuckles, coldstones, acid flasks, etc) drop from mobs?

Reason I ask is we're getting tons of errors in our logs about these items not being found.

If you are seeing them drop, are you seeing them drop from all creature levels or just a few?

Theyve been dropping occasionally on gobos and ogres, cant recall seeing them elsewhere, but then, I wasn't looking for them. Not much of anything at all was dropping at zons or earth plane when I last went, mostly just gems. :(

I do collect trap components and it seems that they only drop on the pre-epic mobs. Sceleton Knuckles, Quarts, and Coldstones beeing the hardest to collect since they don't drop in stacks. Perhap those traps should be more powerfull since thier regents are harder to collect. So far I have not found my trap making skills very usefull even into epic levels. Currently my trap maker is 34th and the DCs on his traps won't affect anyone around his level, even with his epic traps. Most traps are dex based and evasion seems to counter thier effect. As interesting as the traps are now, it requires too many skill points dedicated to trap making to make the process worthwhile. I have found no use for them other then perhaps Aurils brand of trickery.

It's worth noting that the type of creatures you kill and the faction they belong too has an effect on stuff that drops in the class of items that trap components belong too. So if I remember correctly, drops from a rouge will be more likely to drop trap components.

I hoard them because they're so rare, and have to go to low-level areas to farm them. I tend to get most from bandit-type mobs: Near Avendell, Falme, Wyrm Road. I do get a few from higher mobs, but not enough to make up for what I use by any means. I find some on Giant Mountain areas. None in Frost Dale or planes that I recall.

Yes, and I *think* I may have gotten one or two in ice trolls yesterday, but I'm not positive.

Now they're dropiing pretty well, this goes for goblins anyway, not sure about other mobs.

I haven't noticed anything different. How recently was the change made? I can look around for them if you want to suggest some locations.

Yes, they are dropping today though. Got a couple of quartz from the goblins between Neversummer and Avendell.

All I know is we're seeing errors regarding the trap components in the logs, but I'm not sure how long that's been going on.

The only place I 've seen them consistently (before you guys made any changes) was in the goblins in and around the crossroads, the bandits in the badlands, and undead in Old Town North.

Also, the bugbears and goblins on the Old Trade Route, but not as often.

I think the error in the logs is todo with chests. Anyone had any components from chest. In fact, people still seeing chests around?
