reset notifications - just a friendly suggestion

Post by kingfatzo »

Please, again dont use this issue to tangent off of on some meaningless rant (boy am i a hypocrite)... ty 8)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Prelude: I noticed one day when deputydog was resetting the server, he gave a 5 minute warning and counted down by minutes ensuring that:
#1 everyone saw the warning and
#2 everyone had ample time to get to saftey....
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

with that being said, and before i continue it is obviously understandable if the server needs to be reset with urgency ( a uptate or sudden crisis that cannot be avoided/prolonged) Stuff happens
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

and to now get to the point of you reading this ---while no one can be as glorious as deputydog himself :P , --- and With all respects to the DM's and the time they devote, i have one rather simple request /suggestion/idea to propose.... When a reset is planned, would it be possible to give the player base a good, solid, 4-5 minute warning , as to allow them to get to a place that they know will definitley be safe, rather than risking resting in a potentially unstable area....i specifically i am relating to areas such as the planes, as well as the zons and parts of FD, since if a 2 on 3 minute reset warning pops up out of the blue, and you are surrounded by a mob, or far away from a safe area, you might be in for a crappy time when you relog after the reset... (mad dashes to saftey dont always work either..hehe :( )

I have noticed that the warning time given varies by DM to DM, so when you guys all sit down and have a beer for a chit-chat, maybe you could mention this as a way to help out to give the player base a bit more leeway ? (and be sure netrom doesnt force you all to go to denmark ...eh..who goes to denmark ! )

as always, Thanks. :D

No. We already give way too much leeway.

Be lucky Chase isn't in charge or youd all be running around with no weapons except +2 clubs and DMs would reset at a moments notice (and whenever we felt like, not when the players feel its needed).

But lucky for you the god of trickery isnt in charge.... for now

and yes, if chase were in charge , every single helm and armor in the game would be different shades of purple...

I would think of this more as a common courtesy then actual leeway. I was affected by the same 2 minute reset announcement that Fatzo is talking about and had to scramble into a corner of the planes that wasn't specifically "safe". When our party logged back in the two tanks got there just after our cleric who was scrambling to get invis up so that he wasn't torn apart by the mobs that occupied our previously cleared little corner of the planes.

Fatzo is correct in the fact that when you are in an intense battle sometimes even 5 minutes isn't enough time but it at least gives you the opportunity to get out of it safely. Whereas 2 minutes seems rather abrubt and can really ruin your day if you have a boss on the ropes but can't do the final blow in record time.

I know most of the DMs will give a 5 minute warning before a reset and for that we thank you. If it is not possible to give 5 minutes then we understand that as well. If there is an option we really do appreciate the extra time to get somewhere safe.

Thank you
MLoki

Lots of players all trying to save just as the server resets tends to corrupt the player vault, causing a range of problems including the character duplication issues. Less reset warning from DMs means more problems for them to fix later.

well i think dm should just start announcing the reset when a majority of players aren't locked in battle. sorry if others are still in battle but they have no choice. i think it'll be better that way.

players are expected to carry around sme means of escape one way or another such as invis or hastes. so im guessin dms can have a 'degree' of right to call announcements on short notice

listen
i give 3 minute warnings on reset. because i have things to do...you should be happy and praising us for resetting as much as we do..if i happen to walk by my comp and see the irc. and some one asked for a reset i loggin and reset. even if i have some thing to do. back in old ns we played in laggg took 8 minutes to to make 1 attack on old south. and we didnt complain half as much. its sickenings me.

i have a great idea stop finding stupid things to complain and whine about AND PLAY THE GAME

Chase said it exactly right, how many times I was at work and saw requests for a reset and I would jump in and give one. Even though it is so much fun to just sit there waiting to reset getting 20 tells asking me to wait or hurry up...

The problem was in this case nobody had actually said anything in shout about a reset or even having problems with lag. It wasn't until the 2 minute reset was announced that we knew there was a problem.
