Changing faction allegiance

Post by Mr. O'Dearly »

With all the talk of characters used between enemy factions I decided to come up with a possible way of changing allegiances. The change in allegiance would of course make you hostile towards your previous faction and their allies but you would only become neutral towards the faction you change allegiance too. (Traitors cant be entirely trusted.)

The change in allegiance would happen by talking to an NPC who would give you a mission to show that you truly wish to change alleigances. (Killing an NPC of your previous faction). Furthermore, to make it more difficult to change factions, you may only change to a certain faction, depending on which faction you are coming from.

List of changes
starting faction --> faction you change to
LA --> AO
AO --> NC
NC --> SL
SL --> RK
RK --> TC
TC --> MA
MA --> LA

So you may have to make multiple changes to get the faction you want. You would not gain any benefits from your new faction other than simply being neutral to them. All job bonuses from starting factions are lost.
Once you have been around the circle circle of factions you cant keep changing. No faction that you betrayed will accept you back.

The goal of this was to allow those people who are strongly commited to a certain guild within a faction to make those builds that are only available in other factions. In no way should this allow you any benefits from multiple factions.

This would also give even greater reason to punish those persons using friendly toons to raid. (ex. LA toons helping SL to rob LA's cradle) You would now have the option to officially change factions. The punishment would be at the DMs whim, and please, do be evil. :twisted:

And just to make things even eviller, you could add XP bonuses for killing traitor toons, and maybe lose part XP if PK'ed by someone from a faction you betrayed.

Rather than the circulating system proposed above, this could also be an opportunity for the ambassadors to make another appearace. After all, do they just stand around the rift portal all day? The ambassadors would be made neutral to all factions. In order to change allegiance to a faction you would have to find that factions ambassador, wherever they may be, and they will give you the mission to assasinate an NPC from your current faction.

*note- Even if none of these ideas fly for faction changes, I wouldn't mind seeing the ambassadors active in places other than the starting rift portal. What do they do all day besides welcome newcomers to Aetheria?

I like the idea, but I think we have more faction-based stuff to worry about at the moment. Like, regaining faction favor. It is really a pain in the neck when an AoE spell hits one of your defenders and instantly you are an outcast in a faction you were trying to protect.

That idea, although seems good on paper could turn into a sloppy mess...and there are still things within the factions themselves that are still not complete. :wink:

It's a good idea, though...just very complicated to try and implement, and would require a lot of work.

I'd think if a toon outcast or not wished to switch from one allegiance or faction to another, then shouldn't the decision be left up to the DM/deities of those two factions.
My two cents worth. :)
