Splinter Factions
ok, we were joking about this earlier on another thread, but i was thinking about it and thought that it might actually add some new levels of gameplay to the server.
the basic idea of it would be that there are a few extreamist factions in the world that arent quite powerful enough to register on the map of wide scale world conflict(and therefore dont have ambassadors at the rifts), but are still strong enough to present a notable concern to the primary factions. such factions would be difficult to join and would require considerable sacrifices to undertake. In order to even enter the camp of a splinter faction, one would have to be an outcast. and in order to join, they would have to undertake some manner of quest appointed by the splinter factions leader. possibly something along the lines of assasinating a powerful boss character or stealing a specified object.
only RP players would really be in line to join these factions due to the distinct disadvantage of not being able to benefit from the faction relics or the various city merchants. however, splinter factions might be able to provide new sets of jobs(assasin, spy, ect) to suit their needs.
a few ideas i had for splinter factions:
The Halfling Liberation Front:
a small group located near neversummer lead by a demented halfling warrior bent on the complete erradication of all those who would not submit to halfling rulership, they guise this motive with the idea of liberating halflings from the oppression of the tallfolk races.
requirements:
-outcast
-halfing
-chaotic neutral or any evil
-quest: assasinate peppin of neversummer
Cult of Tharizdun:
i already wrote up a long thing about this cult in another thread.
requirements:
-outcast
-any evil, non-lawful
-quest: sacrifice at least 5 players (within 3 levels of yourself) for the glory of tharizdun, one of which must be in your former faction.
Taragrim's horde:
the beginnings of what Chief Taragrim hopes to be the first orcish empire. based deep in the caves of giant mountain, Taragrim's horde hopes to unite all of the orcs and orc kin of aetheria under one banner and overthrow all of the lesser races of aetheria and subject them to the iron fist of the orc.
Requirements:
-outcast
-non-paladin(paladins arent really bent of world domination)
-half-orc only(maybe orc if the devs add it as a race,)
-quest: i'll leave that to the devs
i had thought of a few more, but they've slipped my mind.
discuss!

Chief Bralk I believe, it would be kinda cool for half-orcs and half-ogres to actually JOIN Chief Bralk. This would create A LOT of interest, considering they would acctually be DEFENDING the mountain WITH the giants and ogres (make the giants their allies when they join this splinter faction). This would create great PvP in my opinion, considering the popularity of the mountain, might be good for encouraging a few people to go elsewhere. Also would make very interesting battles

thats actually an ingenious idea, instead of just random people picking on players who come giant mountain for lack of anything better to do, the mountain would actually be defended by a legitimate group. maybe have that as one of the orc jobs, mercenary sent to help defend the giants.

I think 7 factions are plenty enough for NS now. Even with the servers filling up, more than 7 faction could get the player base to start spreading itself thin. And look how a good chunk of the player base right now is concentrated in LA, SL, and AO. Even if more factions were to be added, would they really be able to attract enough players?

You're missing the point Elagneros, these aren't really factions. They're places for outcasts, and I doubt they would affect the population of other factions greatly. A player must be extremely RP, willing to give up his/her job bonuses, and complete the quest for application to actually join these factions. And my own little halfling base I love, and this Mountain Defense idea is awesome. I don't really understand that third evil faction though...

But then giving players the splinter factions to join essentially rewards the players for going outcast. It doesn't seem like the intent of NS4 is to join a faction only to betray it later for a personal benefit. And for the most part, people going for this won't be hardcore RPers, they'll be people who will do it for an advantage.
As for the halfling base, I think Evenshire is a great place to add quests once all the faction jobs are complete. Since Evenshire is its own little NPC faction and not LA, the rift shard there could be made neutral instead of LA like it is now. As I've suggested before, that could be one of several neutral rift shards (with the exceptions of Avendell and FD) a player can earn the right to bind to by completing a quest:

What benefits Elagneros? The people in this Orc Faction must continuously defend it from the constant influx of people who hunt there, and the people from the Evil Clan will constantly be looked upon as an evil threat that must be killed. What better benefits would they get for going into these splinter factions? All the same benefits, except for no relic bonuses. To EVEN JOIN these factions they must complete difficult quests. I'm not seeing advantages, I'm seeing hard-core RP Splinter Factions.
