with animal companions being disabled it makes the spells magic fang, greater magic fang and awaken totaly useless. my suggestion is to make these spells effect summons. this makes thoes spells actualy usable and doesent hinder the rangers already low selection by negating 2 of there spells

one person suggested making it only effect Animal Empathy dominated animals while i think summons would be more helpful anything to make these spells viable would be nice as it is they dont work at all.

to be honest, I feel that Im one of the few who doesnt see the need to bring back familiars/companions (with the possible exception of rangers companions). The summons have been vastly updated and there are enough animals around that animal empathy makes up the lack at low lvles.

Before anyone asks: yes I have played wizards, sorcerers, rangers and druids. with summons the way they are, familiars arent needed.

However, the fact that rangers & druids have spells that only work on companions, and they have none, means that (in my mind at least) these spells should be tweaked to fit this world. The best solution is to make it so the spells work on the dominated animals, since they have taken the place of companions anyway.

this will keep the already powerful summons from getting even stronger, whil also making use out of otherwise useless spells (and face it, rangers dont have many to choose from, so they should all be keepers).

Rangers have always needed a boost, not just from NS... so I definitely think they should get their companions back... maybe even with an extra boost.

They are clearly at a disadvantage over most other classes... although they're useful for taking a single level in epic levels... you can use that favoured enemy feat at ranger lvl 1 and use it for a bonus epic feat. But overall rangers are pretty lame, hence you see very few of them.

I don't know if it can be scripted, but maybe give them HiPS outdoors only once they hit lvl 15 or something... along with a great summon

yep! I'm working on a new ranger that should be pretty sweet.. it has a couple weaknesses, but with the right party, that won't matter ;)

i'd love to see a ranger robe or light armour with a 3 and a 4 ranger spell slot, hide+ms bonuses and +4ac, and DR along the lines of the amazon queen armour, maybe electrical instead of cold DR, and pierce/bludge or pierce/slash... if just such an item existed, you'd see a LOT more rangers running around..or..NOT see them rather ;]

Seconded on some good +Hide armor. THere's really isn't much besides various types of studded leather with hide bonuses around here, and studded leather sucks for a HiPSer. The max Dex of +4 pretty much cancels out the benefits of the hide bonuses on those armors. There's the Duergar Rogue Armor, but that's only level 5.

I think rangers are fine, u just have to build em right. The one i have will do pretty good damage by the time he reaches lvl 40. Plus there is a good hide armour, u just have to look. It's a +7 hide :)

Greater magic fang etc could be somehow change to help unarmed shifter and druid shapes.
