Alignment Shifts
Alignment Shifts
Is there anyway to psuedo enforce alignment restrictions. How about alignment shifts if a good player kills another good player or kills a friendly faction. There should be some consequences. Could go the same way for healing or raising an enemy or anybody for that matter. Good and Evil deads should be defined and awarded in some way. Perhaps just these basic actions should have some effect like;
If you go around killing your own faction you should get a shift towards Chaotic.
If you go around healing and raising your own faction you should get a shift towards Lawful.
If you go around killing your same alignment you should get a shift towards Evil.
If you go around healing and raising your same alignment you should get a shift towards good.
Yeah there would be a fine balance for Chaotic and Evil characters wanting to raise fallen comrades but Evil should be Evil and consider leaving a fallen friend behind every once in awhile Chaos should backstage a friend occasionally. This will make it so that you can't keep leveling an Assasin if he turns good or even loose your Paladinship if you aren't Lawful and Good. Perhaps even loosing your faction if they require a specific alignment. Just some thoughts.

To follow the application of real life DnD, it would have to go something like this...
- Attacking your faction - Chaotic
- Aiding your faction - Lawful
- Attacking your own alignment - Opposite of current alignment
- Aiding your own alignment - Gaining more of your current alignment
- Attacking your opposite alignment - Gaining more of your current alignment
- Aiding your opposite alignment - Opposite of current alignment
The logic behind this is the fundamental (and otherwise oxymoronic to the point of being unplayable) quandery of the Paladin: if killing in general was evil, then a Paladin could never swing a sword. Instead, killing evil is always good, and killing good is always evil. Likewise, helping evil is always evil, and helping good is always good. Being neutral means you don't do either one often enough to make a difference.
As for Neversummer, I'd also think it would be neat if Law/Chaos were tied to quests in factions... if you didn't do a job fast enough, you weren't "holding to your word" and would become more chaotic. If you did it especially quickly, you would be "loyal" and become more lawful.
Of course, alignment changes are a pain to code... got to talk to the devs about that one

And it opens the door to metagaming cheese like intentionally shifting your pally to evil so you can take blackguard levels.

Well, it's hard to definte "levels" of cheese, but I was just on the server watching a group fighting on the Silver Road, and every last one of them was a Sorc/Pally/SD... it definitely impells me onward to making an epic Blackguard with Greater Smite X for all those, quote, "Paladins" running around the world

This one I can answer ... well sort of.
This topic came up prior to NS4 Beta being opened to the general public. Due to the complexity of doing a true alignment system and the limitations of what the engine will allow, it was decided that such a system would not be implemented.
One of the big limitations is lack of subdual damage. For a true alignment system in a PvP world this is a must, even though it adds yet another layer of complexity.
What the devs have planned currently I cant say, I do know however that if the alignment system is looked at again that its priority would be somewhere under adding bathrooms to any of the inns.
