Some observations from the perspective of a new player

Post by Ranges »

Well, the perspective of a new NS4 player is the only one i have, but i thought it might be worth the trouble to explain what i've run into, and perhaps some ways of improving the game for new players.

First, without the (excellent) documentation on the NS4 boards, it would be nearly impossible to get started. Since that documentation exists, there is no problem here :)

Second, the quartermaster (i joined the Northern Coalition) hands out weapons you cant use. In other words, if you're say playing a cleric and buy yourself a shortsword (stupid, i know) you're in trouble: you've spent your cash, and can only get some by bashing critters with your fists.

Third, after the introduction, and leaving the fortress i felt somewhat lost. I wandered around, went into a dryad cave and saw all sorts of creatures that were friendly. I came to the end of that cave, saw a queen, but she wouldnt talk to me. It would be helpful if all dryads you spoke to would tell you something like: there's nothing for you here, or come back when you're more powerfull.

This would be an invitation to explore that place somewhat later, and would help players avoiding long walks that lead to nowhere. Another solution might be a portal at the end that transports you to the surface. Just to save players the walk back :)

NS4 looks pretty cool. I think it's very interesting, but it's hard to find your way in there.. Good luck with the server, i'll be back in there, once in awhile to see what's changed and explore some more :)

Greetings,
-Ranges

Hi all !
I joined recently , like Ranges, in Northern Coalition. I must say the mod , though in beta, is very stable, seems well balanced, interesting, but I also noticed that no NPC actually speaks to you other than the guys in the barracks to buy items and Daeron merchants/vendor (not even the high cleric). I went to this dryad cave, to coalition miner village, a coalition camp... no one speaks, all doors everywhere are locked , there is no interaction !
So Jester what's with that answer ? we checked the website already of course, we saw the map...but where is the roleplay/questing part and the commands I heard of somewhere in the forums ? right now it's a cool hack&slash where you can loot and buy items (nice buying system by the way), but I expected far more...is it because you removed the quests for some issue ? or are you just planning another release and abandoning the beta players ? Sorry for the tone, but the quick answer about the map made me mad, like it's the main problem :s
Anyway good job for the PW, I hope it will get awesome soon.

Well, for Northern Coalition best bet is to just explore and find/destroy as many undead as you can. They're so easy for clerics and paladins it is almost a sin. And just because there are Fey around doesn't mean they have to be hostile. Heck, I should prefer that the map at the door of my city didn't also contain a door entering an enemy encampment.

And why shouldn't I be allowed to buy a weapon I cannot use? What if you had a friend that you were partying with that ran out of cash buying their armour and you had some money left?

And the buying system is pretty generic actually. Though, for starting characters inexpensive equipment is available to get them started. The prices go up MUCH faster for good armour.

And it is okay to feel lost. Heck, I still get lost. But, that's why you do exploring. If you want some help send out a shout and ask if someone wants to help you out. I've got a few low level characters in random cities that came about just because I saw someone at a low level and figured it was a good chance to party and get a new character started.

These aren't bugs, but I'd thought I'd pass them on (mechanics only, no opinion yet :D ).

When speaking to the Job guy in Neversummer City in the barracks, when veiwing a job when you already have one, it puts you in a loop that you have to ESC out of. I was maxed in militia, so it kept looping through messenger.

2nd-- I scribed a scroll in magic shop. Then I started to scribe, but changed my mind. Left the shop, entered underground. Next spell I cast went nowhere and did nothing (like it was still attached to the scroll making process). Perhaps the whole shebang could cancel out when you leave the shop.

Anyways, back to beta-testing it some more. Thanks for the module!
