Timer on transition

Post by report »

Like seen in other team pvp servers, and they don't lag at all even with 50 players online. If people find it annoying then just apply it on who is carrying a relic. I'd love to see the usual transgamer to read "you have to wait 10 seconds before using another transition".

That's actually a good idea, although I have misused the transitions too to get away from a fight :).

i don't see how limiting your transitions will limit lag. only quick transitions will affect cpu enough to make a difference, but your average user doesn't jump in and out of transitions constantly for the fun of it...also i think they use them to keep players from running while getting killed.

How much "lag" are we talking about here? I haven't noticed any since the network throughput was fixed.

I don't think it's about limiting lag, it's about limiting player's freedom of movement. And it would be adding almost no lag to the world if I understood it correctly.

I'm not really worried about the lag aspect of it. It is just really annoying when people rapidly exit in and out of transitions to try and shake off someone who is chasing them.

If a player can afford a second computer, we allow them to dual log. If a player can afford a fast-[censored] computer to trans 5 times to your 1, why shouldn't that be reasonable? Transing is part of the game. Depending on your toon, transing can mean a lot of things, from assassinating, to healing, and yes, even playing a trans-game, trying to outwit the opponent with a guessing game of 'which side am I on?'

Server side it's all held in active memory. At a guess trans isn't any rougher on it than continuing to fight something (not so much as a few somethings). It does have to spit out stuff to the client though.

Client side you need to wait for the like 100k of area files to get there as well as load the new textures/models (cache is small in nwn--if someone had access to source that's one of the first things to rewrite after file i/o probably).

Doing something like the OP is pretty easy, but I actually agree with tep on this one.

I think he's trying to say that the 'fix' would cause no lag, and prevent people from trans hopping like a derp. Its interesting, and maybe worth considering.

Like any other aspect of the game, that doesn't mean it can't be questioned.

Exactly, I'll trow in an example from real game: a cot pally monk steals a relic from rk, a wizard/sd with 110 spot damages it to "near death" , untill the cot start going in and out between lake and gatehouse map , many times until it disappears from the screen.. I am not 100% sure how this trick works but i suppose it has something to do with lag. Probably it increases general lag and puts the spotter in a condition he has not time to do the spot check giving the "rabbit" time to zone back accumulating lag and delay to move behind a wall or a ramp. Guess who was the cot?
