Except that with relic raids and guild activities(/wars), even if Avendell is disregarded the chances of lots of players wanting to converge on the same area are actually really rather high.

Yeah, the Three Towns has a great portalling system. A year before, they were always full at 50/50 and needed a new server. The portalling system allows you to use your unique item that you start with (like the NS4 journal) to port over to the other world at any time. And if one server goes down for a reset, you are automatically portalled over to the other one.

kill boss on server 1...save location...portal to server 2...kill same boss...repeat

isnt this what happened with ns3 originally?

That would be something that definitely would have to be overcome. Who knows maybe a temporary tag of some sorts that when a boss was killed it wouldn't spawn on other server. By splitting up areas of the server into sections that would circumvent the 2 boss problem. I don't see how that would be that big of a problem to implement, I mean, put 2 factions worth of maps to a server and maybe have SL and planar areas together on the same server. This is all said without regards to cost, as I know this would be intensive both technically and financially. I am just throwing things out there with hopes that it might spawn better ideas, which truthfully, shouldn't be that hard considering the player knowledge base (DM's and Dev's included) I have seen here.

Another thought, is there any reason in particular that a reset system similar to 3.5 cannot be implemented?

And if the mod is split over a few servers as it was when beta started, how would relics be defended? Say i am on server 1 and AO is on server 2.. i would not know when AO is being raided.

Maybe using an intraserver messaging service? Not really sure about the mechanics or feasability of such a thing. Maybe having a server that houses player databases as well as taking care of messaging and scripted clean-ups. That being the domain controller with the factions taking the role of the separate domains.

Seriously doubt thats possible, both servers over there are always near full. Pretty crowded, I'd doubt you'd be able to portal to the other server to exploit that. Respawn on bosses isn't that quick either. Chances are that someone already killed that same boss on one of the servers.

On exaria2 they use some nifty script that allows players to use an item to who is on both servers, and a messeging bird can be used to send messages to chars on the other server.

Is NS4 using the Bioware Database for persistancy or NWNX with MySQL? I know there's a lot of functionality that is available using NWNX with MySQL that just isn't possible through the Bioware DB. Especially if you have a web coder who knows how to take advantage. It would be possible to add a section to the web site that lists who is on the server at any given time.

Unfortunately, I cannot speak to how trivial or painful moving from the Bioware DB to an NWNX solution would be.

You think we'd have gotten this far using the Bioware Database? NWNX and MySQL are our various breads and butters...

Hmmm, if that's the case, I might know someone who'd be willing to host. I could be wrong but I believe he was one of the primary guys working on NWNX.

Busy busy

Post by Rummybum »

Busy, lots of people to play with is part of what is great with NS4, but waiting an hour to get on would be... AN IMPROVEMENT.

Seriously DD your great but dont go into the profit business with that idea that demand will fall in mid august thing.

The server is more jammed now than ever before. If there is any down time its when I'm at work. I think the lowest Ive seen in the last two weeks, at like 4:35 AM CST on a week day has been 19. Between 5PM and midnight 46/46 is standard.

I love playing with a bunch but if you want to transfer equipment or something forget it.

all i keep hearing is wah wah wahwawhahh ......

the longest it has ever taken for me to sneak into a spot is 10 minutes. :P

in all seriousness ..... all of the high school n00bs will be dropping off a bit now that school is in session  ...

and all my fellow college students will also become buisier as the semester grinds on...

so i think we will eventually see a decrease, especially during the weekdays ....but friday and saturday nights will always be primetime. :D

How about a queing server with a low max number of players, say 10. Instead of connecting directly to NS4, you connect to the queing server, and are given a place in line, and when a spot on the main server opens up, you are automatically ported there, and play as normal.

Maybe even have a dueling arena to pass the time while you wait.

Just a suggestion, dunno how feasible it would be though.
