It's cheesy when there's no real role-playing reason to back up the shift. A paladin doesn't start his career saying, "Oh, I'll be good and virtuous up to level X, when I shift alignment so I can start taking blackguard levels".

technically the only RPing way to go blackgaurd is the PnP way. a "friendly" encounter with a truly evil outsider that results in the player being tainted and thinking of more.
