Wars generate many casualties among the combating forces. Another thing they create are refugees and prisoners. Why don't we have any prisoners? Yes, many here may be ruthless killers but, there should be some captures. How about a modification to the death script. It can be determined when death is due to PK. How about sending those PKd to a POW camp. Characters would remain in the POW camp for say 12 hours real time or 24 hours game time, while a prisoner exchange is arranged. The prisoner would have to talk to the guard to find out how much time is left until they are released. Released prisoners are returned to their bind point when the exchange is completed. Maybe this is another scripting nightmare but it could help with other issues that always pop up.

Edit: A couple of other thoughts. Death Express would have to be disabled in some fashion to prevent escapes. Time of imprisonment related to level. One (game) hour per character level. This would prevent lowbies/newbies from getting frustrated and make higher levels pay the price for failure.

I've seen variations of this on other NWN servers: Jails that players would be teleported to if they triggered certain traps or were "captured" by certain monsters. In both cases, you had to escape the jails by picking very difficult locks, disarming very difficult traps, and defeating monsters. Other players could help with the escape attempt though, but at the risk of being captured themselves.

Maybe incarceration could be tied in with the relic raids. If you are defeated/killed you would end up in that faction's prison.

The thing is, I don't think it would be fun, which is the whole point.... I know I don't want to sit around for 12 hours.

I know this is beyond the scope of NS4 because of the ongoing work on NS5, but the law system on World of Torr was impressive and a lot of fun. Especially the part where you could get your friends to try and influence the NPC judges' decision.

the idea is interesting, however hours of realtime is way too long.

who wants to get their play time cut off for the night because they lagdied, or got ganked by a hilevel on the mountain, etc?

the camp idea is pretty cool if it was somewhat time consuming but possible to get out of, and limited to defense/offense situations (death in a faction city). it would give attackers a chance to get the job done rather than repeatedly face the same defender who bound in their hometown every 30 seconds. same for attackers.

however it would have to be tweaked so that anyone could get out, otherwise relic raiding and pk become the province of high level toons only (which is against the stated goal of the raid system).

besides, all anyone has to do to escape is commit suicide in their cell and bing - back at your rift shard. You could theoretically capture someone if you kept them asleep the whole time or charmed them into not escaping or kept them sufficiently bound that they can't even bite their own tongue. In any case, any interesting method of escape would end up fairly anticlimactic as you struggle with a guard to get his weapon... and then promptly impale yourself with it.

The only way you could capture someone in Aetheria would be to capture them and their rift shard together.

You only have to make the prison NON PVP and the Death Express won't work.

I am definitely not a programmer but couldn't the setup be that if you are killed in an enemy's city you are transported to thier prison for say 6 to 12 game hours with no casting or "dying" abilities? Your allies could release you from the room or leave you to rot. It would add a little tweak to the relic runs and help slow down the wave raiding.

Make it so that if you log out when in prison the prison time carries over to when you next log in, and if you log any other charactor in on that user Id then they join the original offending charactor in jail.

Restrict that player from using shout, party, or tell, as they are in solitory.

Make it so the player cannot accept party invites.

Make the cell like the shops where you CANNOT die so death express wont work, give the room only one exit to the excecution chamber and that will be on a time lock.

Make prisoners from all factions share the same jail with personalised time lock keys.

Disable all spells and have a Magical darkness and clucking chain sounds.

Have an AFK test script running so if you leave the keyboard during your prison time you lose a level if you cant respond to the scripted dialoge.

Remove all the prisoners gear and paint it all bright orange and place it in a personal chest in the execution chamber.

When the player has made it to the execution chamber and put on all there orange gear make them ride the death express.

Make it so you can get out of the cell early if you rat out a higher level charactor of an allied faction, sending them to jail.

Make it so if you shout more than 3 times in a game hour you go directly to jail do not pass go do not collect $200. without warning

Make it so if you win the thunderdome you get sent to jail.

Make it so if you swear or say yub, or pwn, or n00b on shout you go to jail.

Make it so Shadow Dancers have a get out of jail free card.

Make it so Paladins get double the duration.

Make it so the 'escape artist' feat halves the duration.

Play the shortest sound byte in the game in prison on constant loop, with screams added.

Make it so you can get out of jail early by 'confessing' to the devil-angel, in exchange for the charactor being deleted and a 24 hour realtime server ban.

Maybe 3hrgame time/6 min IRL would be acceptable.
Anything more would be outrageous.
And they're would have to be a cost to the Jailer too. (perhaps a scaled system for variable jail times. 50k/game hour?)
Otherwise their would be2 much room for explioting.
And have The Jail in Avendale with an option of another player posting Bail.
And under only these circumstances.
Raiding Opposing Faction
and that faction does not hold Raiders relic
The Relic cradle must be tapped by any raider and in the process of weakening or defeated.

They're would be probably a token you would have to use and corpse that way they're would be chance for a raider to spawn to avoid jail.

the big question for all this is whether you want to slow down pk or not.

waveraiding/defending can get goofy but if you're LOOKING for a fight (which almost by definition you are by going on raids) then you kinda want the other guy to get back up so you can whack em.

the way it is now a good fight can be pretty action packed. I'd hate to lose that.
