Many of you know about the chess board like flooring in the building located in the Avendal Crossing area. Had a suggestion of how to put that building to use: game of Battle Chess where the players are the game pieces. Ideally would need 32 players so all chess pieces are present (king, queen, rook, biship, knight, and 8 pawns per side), however I believe it could be played with 16 players (2 kings, 2 queens, 8 pawns, and 4 other pieces to be decided on what kind at start of game (rook, biship, or knight)) that is 8 per side.
Two people would be designated the game Strategist. The strategist would control where their side's pieces move on their side's turn. The strategist would be whoever is designated the king (or queen), the gods (dm event: Lolth vs Torm etc.), or guild leaders (if a guild vs guild game). Each person would be designated a piece type: someone the king, some else the queen, etc. When the strategist instructs a player to move, they would move as their chess piece would: pawn could move forward 1 and only attack adjacent sqaures on diagonal, etc. Onces player pieces meet at a square they duel to determine who wins that sqaure for their side. The loser may remain dead on the floor until their king is able to reach them (moving 1 square per turn) and then the king may raise so that player may rejoin the game. If the deceased player peice is forced spawned by the timer, then they are out of the game.
I envision melee battles to win the square. Would need to figure out how to adjust AoE spells and such to work within this structure. By adjust I don't mean dev's changing, but rather players watch collateral damage so only hit defender of a square or your square's attacker. Maybe only those actually dueling to be hostile to one another...otherwise friendly until time to duel for a square (fixes most AoE except non-party friendly spells). Another part is no running away, stand your ground to either win the square or hold the square for your side.
Your thoughts?

You've just described Archon, a very very old game.

Sounds like something that would go well with Terrace Mettle actually.
Do people even use that?

Rarely. People go to the arena to duel sometimes, but that is about it.
