This suggestion has two parts, a "how difficult is it?" and a "how viable is it?"
I would like to see some journal functionality that lists and records areas and bosses.
It would list areas as unexplored. All or those relevant to your level and lower. These could all be named "Unexplored area".
When you enter an area (Lets take The Snake Pit) the relevant entry in your journal will change from "Unexplored area" to "The Snake Pit".
When you kill the boss of that area it would log that in the journal entry too.
This would give (especially new) players some incentive to explore more.
This could also be linked to some NPCs that will tell you about areas in the world. Some guy telling you about the Tomb of ghouls at Rock Peak, creating that entry in your journal. (The other day I spoke to some guy with several 20+ toons that did not even know about this place).
These entries would not tell you where to go (or maybe talking to the right NPC might) but will merely give you an indication that there is still areas that you have not yet explored and log those that you have explored/completed.
Now how difficult this would be to implement (and maintain) and how viable this is, is left to question.

Re: Journal functionality and areas
Not a bad idea.. and the journal makes it easier to limit Meta gaming.

Re: Journal functionality and areas
Journals are module-wide. You can put in custom tokens, but those are also still module-wide. Also journal does not have a hook for being open, just the script commands that give/take entries. (Can't recall any nwnx hooks on it.)
We don't organize areas by level. There would also be an element of say Sleeth city areas being level 1 to AO/RK, but say level 16+ for others.
Conceptually possible, see a couple different ways to do it...none being very cpu/memory light (so just make it an out of combat thing). Not a bad idea, just an I'm not going to do it idea
