Trees in the Abyss

Post by ashsagoon »

I love the Abyss. It's an awesome area and beautifully created. But the trees on the first map, while cool looking, are way worse than the horses ever were. No matter your system or your nwn.ini settings (i increased the mem usage way back when someone suggested it), you will lag every single time they are loaded. And when you run forward and try to pull something back you'll just freeze as multiple trees are loaded and unloaded.

So I ask to please remove the awesome looking willow(?) trees from the first map of the Abyss.

Worse than the horses? No way, not even close. I did however notice a slight lag spike (maybe a half second at most) then it was fine from then on... anyone else having lots of issues with the trees beyond the first spike?

Every time a tree comes into the frame it generates a lagspike. It's really like the horsemen. Unfortunately.

Yeah I spent alot of time in the abyss with a few toons, those trees require you to play it real slow, as lots of mobs spawn by them too ';)

i don't think they are near as bad as the horses but they are bad. perhaps you could leave a few right by the entrance where the mobs don't spawn? they aren't bad as long as you aren't running for your life. they have been the straw that broke the camel's back a few times. (course my lousy toons got no business being there in the first place). :)

Replaced willows with random stuff (mostly hanged dwarves--they cheer up any area) where found (First map, Divorce). Threw some random stuff and mobs into Frozen Hell as well.

Another option would be to put back the paladin horses, then the trees wouldnt seem as bad.

I would *love* to put horses back in... I spent a lot of time writing custom horse code to get them in the mod while 1.69 was still in beta. I can't believe Bioware released them in their present state... they're pretty much unusable for PWs unless I'm missing something.

Thanks for changing them. I hate to see it different since I think the Abyss is one of the coolest areas in the game. Linux you did a great job on it. I miss the horses too. It's just after a while the frustration of Bioware's screwup outweighs the cool factor :(

Is it just the willows, or do other 1.69 added trees cause the same issue?

I don't know what other 1.69 trees there are. It seems to be all the 1.69 content though except maybe the tile sets (which suck cuz they won't break away so you can't see anything).

The system you use proably has an effect on how much lag you suffer as well.

It may get worse with a slower system but it's really bad on my super fast system. I get about 120+ fps all the time including when there's tons of magic going on and with fraps running. Even recording those movies at 1680x1050 I could get at least 60 (the max in fraps iirc).

I've tried upping the max memory line in the .ini with no change in performance. I'm really not sure why it even lags. Even loading the model/animations/textures from the hd shouldn't take nearly that long.
