Hey all, I probably won't be on for a while, My computer fried and I'm tryimg to restore, but I'm in london and all my disk are in the US. If anyone has ideas for a computer build around $2K let me know. The only thing I would use the computer for is email, message boards and NWN.
Thanks,
Cade

I got my computer workin by restoring to a save point. Still need a gaming computer if any of you techno geek types have suggestions. (i'm just a standard geek, not a techno geek)

If your willing to build it yourself you can get a sweet system for $2000.
And if you can dress a paper doll you can build a computer, its all slot A to tab B.
Here is a link for the system I'm building. I went with option 2, and inluding shipping to bush Alaska (it doesnt get more expensive) it came to $1774.
http://www.nsrealm.com/public/ns4/viewtopic.php?t=5698
A short synopsis:
.5 terrabyte storage with the ability to expand to in excess of 2 terrabyte
The hottest nVidia card on the market with 1 gig on board
2 gig on board memory
and the ability to transfer 3 gig of data a second internally (move a full length DVD movie from one drive to the other in under 3 seconds).
If thats not what your looking for or are looking for something a little more budget oriented let us know what you are looking for and we can start a system design contest and you get to choose the rig you want to build. Its always fun trying to put a system together.

i really love that card .... makes mine look like a n00bie nvidia card.
my past experiences -----
my roomie built a pc form scratch for around $1,100 ...
ordered the parts online and we assembled it here, with only minor hardware conflicts
erm, i cant recall the motherboard type
it has an amd64 , 2ghz
2gb ddr @533mhz ram
300gb internal storage across 2 drives
--i forget the video card -- equivilant to my nvidia6800gs
big a$$ case, and a 550watt powersupply
this was last year mind, you so u could get somthing even better for a simiar price
---------------------
or my setup - also now over a year old , spent under 1,400 when all was done
pentium4 HT 2.8ghz
2.5gb DDR2 @533mhz ram
300gb internal storage (2 HD's), 300gb external
600watt powersupply
nvidia 6800gs 256mb ddr3 video card
etc.....
runs TES-4 Oblivion like cake
-----------
tho i must say, TGPO's setup is quite awesome ....its a frickin bargian !
but it really depends on what you will use it for.....

warning :a fatzo-ramble ahead:
pluralize that word : games
essentially its an investment --
My pc that i bought in 2000 lasted me for nearly 5 years before i upgraded...and that computer was a pentium 3...lol..... a dell xps that ran me nearly $3,000 .....granted after 2003, it wasnt able to play many games made after 2003..but nonetheless thats 3 solid years of nice gaming preformance, not to mention its many other uses......and the thing is still in use today
...and i expect to get the same tine use out of this one i bought here that ran me just more than half of what i spent back in year 2000 ....you can get a nice pc for an even nicer price....its well worth it ---and if you enjoy gaming as much as some of us do here - you really do want the best that wasy everything looks the best when you are playing it.....
---and yes to answer your question , this PC here that i am using was built with Oblivion in mind

I'm the same way, my last desktop I built around 5 years ago and while not competative anymore is still in the game. For a few bucks I can finish the upgrade path I had in mind when I first put it together and it will be a vista capable machine.
The trick is in deciding 1 thing and guessing at another. Anymore you have to design around your video card, so decided on nVidia or ATI before you start thinking about anything else. The next thing needs guessing at, what direction will hardware be taking in the future?
With these 2 things then you can hunt for a motherboard that will allow you an upgrade path. My old comp is running 1.2 Ghz Athlon, and can be upgraded to a 2400+, as long as they keep making AGP video cards I can keep replacing the ones I burn out(go with EVGA cards, they have a lifetime warranty).
The new comp, and where I made some educated guesses at. SATAII drives will be the thing for the nest 5 or 10 years, AM2 socket for AMD processors for the next 3 or 4 years, and PCI-E for the next 6 or so years. So this gives me a clear upgrade path to keep in mind when I choose the mobo. At the end of its planned life I will hopefully be able to do a final upgrade to the system (without swapping the mobo) that will keep it capable for a further 3 years or so.
I plan on a 5 year lifetime before I have to seriously start thinking about a new build, and topping out the upgrade path should leave me with another 3 years of functionality or a total of 8 years out of any machine that I build, over the. This is several years more than you will be able to get from any over the counter machine that you can buy in the same price range.

Thanks
Thanks for all the help. I'll probably start buying parts next month. Oh. I don't play with dolls, so I don't know if I can dress one. Thanks TGPO
